Regarding item 1, I can't answer directly from personal experience as I didn't mount mine in a weatherproof box as you are wanting to do, but you should be fine. Running off 12 volt I haven't noticed...

I tied into my step light as a 12 volt power source. That light was relatively poor anyhow, so I installed some of the leftover strip behind the steps; both looks nice and is functional!
