Yeah, but that is plugging the bottom end of the drain path.

In my way of looking at it, stopping the water from getting in above the screws is the issue.

It's not the vent tube. It's the fill tube running uphill from the fill opening. Like others, we use a 2 or 3 foot section of water fill hose, and push it most of the way in.
