Looks like it is just the finish material. Normally that is just stapled in since its very lightweight. The issue might be the DVD player did not hit any backer. It's just screwed into the 1/4"...

The more difficult, would be to add feet to the sofa, but then you have to figure out a way to bolt the sofa back...
