Corelle or ...?

Hi all,

As we transfer from my 21 year old Grandparents' Class C to our new TT, I want to upgrade our tableware. Trying to stay green and away from the "bad" plastic, I am looking into what we should get. I think something we can microwave is best, thus the Corelle idea. But I am concerned about the breakage. Thoughts?

Thanks!
Mary

When I furnished our TT with dishes I was concerned with weight and breakage, so everything (except for two items) is plastic in the kitchen. I believe some plastic dishes can be used in the microwave. I also use the Ziploc plastic containers and they can be used in the microwave. Glass dishes and cookware can get very heavy.

We just updated our tableware to Melamine tableware from Target. melamine-plates : Target Search Results for examples. (And currently on-sale in store.)
Not microwave safe, but, we hardly use the microwave, so it's not really an issue.
The fact that Melamine is an organic resin keeps them "green", and now we won't have to keep buying disposable dishes. They are lightweight and, according to the reviews, hold up well.

My vote is for Corelle which I have in my trailer. It handles nicely, looks & feels great and hard to break. I found a lot of plastic dishes are not microwave safe - like all the stuff I brought last year for tent camping.

we have been using correlle at our camp for 20 years. most o this was tent camping so the gear had to ride in my utility trailer. To the best of my memory we never had a breakage. I say go correlle as it's strong not overly heavy and can handle what you throw at it. Plus it doesn't collapse in your lap like paper does.

Ended up finding some super cheap polyproplyene plates. Apparently they are micowave safe. I won't be testing that but I think it's a better starting point than the corelle. for now, at least. Thanks all!

Glad you found something that will work for you. I like Corelle a lot but it's not the cheapest to start with. A few weeks after I brought Corelle for my TT Walmart had a few patterns of Corelle on sale for Black Friday - something like $12 per box (setting for 4).

Just go with something that will work for you and it sounds like you have. As for those plates you are unsure about putting in the microwave you could include a microwave plate or two for cooking.

Have fun with your future outings!

Corelle by far, lighter, durrable. decided to go with better dishes and NSF (commercial grade) cook ware. drinking glasses are acrylic (that tend to crack over time).
my last trailer had melamine. no problems but just wanted the corelle plates.

bake ware is Norticware. commercial grade good heavy (good heat distribution) bake ware. except for some of the very small (novilty type) items, is made in USA.

Hi Mary! We have been full timing for 10 years now and have used Correll since. None broken due to traveling and great in the microwave.

most Corelle in now marked "hecho china"
i am NOT tree hugger but find that made in china is not good for the environment
i avoid dole fruit and many other food and drug items made in china
i always check the label and sometimes im just stuck with chinese goods
i buy American when at all possible and yes i will pay more if necessary and even accept goods that others will say are inferior (they are not) in my opinion I will always buy American cars and trucks my lincoln pu truck is 4 years old zero dollars on repairs other than wear items,my jeep 79% american content only defect is chinese made radio lose time ,no dealer fix yet,my f53 mh runs powerfully and flawlessly
I AM AN AMERICAN BY CHOICE
i hope i didnt get to far off topic
we do use corelle in our MH made in America many years ago
now that you have read my rant
GO RV'ing

The only issue with Correlle is that it will become brittle over time if it is washed in a dishwasher with detergent that contains bleach . Electrosol I think.
My DW has been thru the gambit with shattering plates in our home when they hit the floor. Customer service has replaced broken items and made the above suggestion. Now the dishes bounce off the floor.
A brand new set in the camper should be bullet proof ..

Corelle is great. Nearly unbreakable and takes little room.

Be careful microwaving plastic, some of it outgasses stuff you don't particularly want to eat. Particularly those things made for single use or cold uses only. Probably not a problem with dishes but I used to run a thermoset plastic machine as a summer job and the "Melmac" dishes we molded had a curious urine smell.

Corelle all the way. I hate paper plates; they collapse, are expensive in the long run, and take up a lot of room. I've had correlle foe years; first while tent camping, and now in our TT. I've only broken ONE cup in my 40 years of using it, both camping and at home.
