Meat smoking

Just curious what others take with them to smoke some meat.

I used to haul a charcoal smoker with me but it got annoying when trying to do really long smoke and it wouldn't gold temp. I'm looking for maybe something electric that would work and not take up a lot of space. The Ninja combo unit looks really interesting. https://a.co/d/g7Q5lRZ

Masterbuilt used to have a small electric smoker and I took it a few times but it was hard to maintain a consistent temp with the controller so I ended up selling it. A friend has brought a Green Mountain Grill Pellet Smoker before. I wanted one but they are pricy and not sure I would want to deal with it. I think link is for a newer version than what he had.

I have the Masterbuilt Portable Gas Smoker. https://youtu.be/SDhd4OkkPcI

It does pretty well and I don’t have to tend the charcoal constantly. It doesn’t have a huge capacity, but it’s very portable.

I also once made a portable version of the weber Smokey Mountain bullet. It uses the base and lid from a small grill and the body from an aluminum tamale pot.

It works very well, but you have to tend the charcoal the whole cook. But you can use the grill parts as your charcoal grill.

Where I live the camping season comes with burn bans due to potential wildfires, so open flame and charcoal are prohibited. Lot of folks have all sorts of electric smokers. There are numerous brand out there and all are good for certain purposes. You have to pick one with sufficient wattage to properly smoke your product.

I bought one of these a few months ago and love it! Have smoked brisket, salmon and pork loin, air fried some wings and the smash burgers turn out awesome!

Check out CJ on youtube for some great recipes.

We always smoke ours at home in an electric smoker, flavored with real hickory. At the campsite, the meat warms nicely over the campfire, or on the grill, or in the microwave. My view on camping is relaxing, not cooking and working.

I have the Green Mountain Davy Crockett pellet grill. I can smoke and cook at the camper, or anywhere there is a 12 volt supply. I have ran it off of my golf cart on occasion.

I built one of these too - works very well and can serve dual purpose as charcoal grill and smoker. Due to the small size, cooking capacity is limited but always plenty of space for up to 10 guests. You do have to monitor the amount of ash and keep it cleaned out periodically to ensure good airflow. Using better quality charcoal will help with that from what I've read, but I just stick with the cheap stuff LOL.

We carry an Amazn Smoke Tube, and for small smoke jobs ot works pretty good. They're handy when there's no power for a smoker.

During the summer months we spend more time in the camper than we do at home. Just looking for a portable option that won't get destroyed in travels. I may just wait and see if there are any black Friday deals this year for a cheap electric smoker that I could just leave in the camper. A few years ago I picked up a Masterbuilt from Lowes for around $100. I had it for 3-4 years before it gave out.

I have that one. It seems to work well but it draws a lot of current. At the very least make sure your extension cord is 12 gauge (10 is better), less than 25’ and you have enough amps left coming from your RV. Or plug in to another outlet. I plug mine in to a 20 amp outlet at home that’s part of my RV hookup pedestal. I tried a smaller gauge extension cord and thought I was going to burn the whole house and yard down it got so hot. Even when plugged directly in to the 30 amp outlet with an adapter. The 20 amp outlet and good extension cord did the trick.

Yep... at 1760 watts, that will tax a 15a circuit.

I'm a huge Traeger fan, the little Ranger is a nice unit. Louisiana Grills makes something similar and there are cheaper knock offs out there. I get Bob4's thing about relaxing, but to me an afternoon prepping, smoking and then enjoying the fruits of my labour from the Traeger is an afternoon well spent at the camp and I find it relaxing and very enjoyable....as do our neighbours and friends.
But we are also full time, so different than travelling around I suppose.

I have that model also except it has a built in thermometer. I use it all the time at home and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. I have smoked pork, chicken and veggies that have all turned out great. I have also grilled steaks and pork chops. I decided to buy one after a friend smoked a pork shoulder on his while we were camping and everyone enjoyed it. I purchased it and a carry bag on Amazon which makes it easy to haul around. It holds a 5 to 6 pound roast nicely and is a good size for 2 to 4 people.

IF I'm in an area, or season where open flame is smart or acceptable, I bring my Grilla Grills Chimp pellet smoker. I'ts 120vac, and I run it off my campers battery bank and a 500w pure sine inverter. I also use it in this manner at my off-grid cabin when we're not in wildfire season. It's a great little smoker. Some other brands make 12vdc models, but this one works great for me, and is easily portable with folding legs than can be used on a picnic table, or a tailgate if desired. I have a friend with the Traeger tailgate smoker, and wouldn't recommend that one. https://www.grillagrills.com/category/chimp

I have my WSM 14” with me. It is amazing how much you can actually put on it. It holds temps great. I found a storage bag for it and it fits easily in the back of my truck.

Try a snake

If you Google the term “charcoal snake“ you’ll find a technique for slow smoking that controls its own temperature. Designed to work in any round kettle type smoker. Simple answer to using what you already have.

I have the Green Mountain Grill Trek, which I think is yhe same thing as the Davy Crocket. I love it. Iworks great, but it is not necessarily what I would call portable. It did fit in the cargo compartment of my 5th wheel, but doesn't fit in the motorhome. You could carry it on the hitch, but it's also too heavy for me to lift by myself. I do use it a lot though.
