If I use coals it would be at least about 10 -12 on top about the same on bottom. A lot of times I use the embers from our fire in the pit and spread them around on top and put some underneath. You will smell it cooking within 20 Min. take the lid off and check. Its fun to make it did take a few times to get the hang of cooking with a dutch oven we do it all the time on our scout camp outs. thanks firefighter, i will. saw a camp neighbor a couple yrs ago with a stack of 4 or 5 ovens going making dinner. apparently not his first rodeo.......

While in Goshen, there was a demonstration of Dutch oven cooking. I couldn't believe how easy it was! He even made meat loaf in one! I can't wait to try it out!
