Any ideas on what was the cause for failure? Actual surge or some type of failure?

That's good to know PI stepped up to the plate and replaced your SP, no questions asked.

That was a melt down. It would be nice to hear if Progressive tells you what happened to generate that heat... some of us have internal hard wire units. Very good to hear they replaced it for you. Your external unit must have done its job, bet you couldn't read the error code.

I had a similar experience with Progressive Industries after a loose 30 amp Rv park's outlet caused damage to the suppressor's plug. Even though I purchased it used off of Craigslist, Progressive replaced the plug free of charge. They are class act!

Made in the good ole USA with a lifetime warranty...now that's value and money well spent..I told this story in another PI thread but here goes...I purchased my external 50amp PI prior to Memorial Day and have used it twice. My traveling buddy purchased one at the same time and his did not work. He called the 800 service and # on a Sat and got a live person...the person on the other end asked a few questions and said "you definately need a replacement, call the office on Monday and tell them Tommy said to send you a new one ASAP"....my buddy asked..."Are you sure that is all I have to do"...he said..."It better be. I own the company"....when he called he received the replacement and a shipping label to send the damaged one back....to me that is mone well spent

When I had questions about my recently purchased PI, I called, asked for customer service and they put me on with "Tommy". Must be a pretty small company. Your PI unit looks like you jammed a marshmallow stick in it and held it over the fire.

Which poses the question: Although I prefer to install a hardwired unit with remote readout, is the plugin unit actually safer? Although this one looks sort of toasted, I wonder if it had been an internal unit could there have been a fire as a result? Has anyone ever heard of a PI unit catching fire?

I had a Progressive Industries surge protector melt because I was stupid. I ran the A/C and the water heater at the same time. No damage to my coach, no damage to the pole I was plugged into. But I figured since it was my stupidity I wasn't entitled to a free replacement. So I bought another one, the one from Camping World, which I used for nine months until rain wrecked it, and now I have a Progressive Industries one again, and they are even cheaper now on Amazon.com.

DXSMac -
That seems really odd to me (the problem with your first one). We have the PI 30 amp portable unit. Just this past weekend it worked just fine and we were running the AC nearly nonstop (it was 90 degrees where we were) and had the water heater on electric the whole time. We even used the microwave and a hair dryer at various times too. I don't profess to know a lot about RV's or electric but would think you should have been OK. Can you share more? I'd like to learn what the AC + water heater issue is.

I'm in a Class C and have 30 amps. Well, actually, I wasn't in an RV park at the time. I was at a friend's house. This friend put in an RV plug special for me, so I can visit and park in his driveway. The friend is an engineer, he researched to get the right plug, had a professional install the plug etc.... so I don't think the friend's plug in was the problem.
It was 100 degrees. I was running the A/C, the electric water heater (and you are already up to 25.5 amps when you are doing that!) plus I had the frig on electric (3 amps), and and all that puts you right up to 29 amps. Plus my laptop was plugged in, and I think I had the TV on with a DVD to entertain the cat while I was visiting my friend in his house. All that puts you right up very close to 30 amps. Something blew.
The following appliances pull 12 amps:
Space heaters
A/C
microwave
water heater
hair dryers
