Yamaha EF2000is Generator Kit

I searched this forum and did not find a product review for this product so I thought I would start my first post on this forum with a review. Seems the thing to do to contribute.

I bought two (2) of these inverter generators. The reason? Well, because I am not getting any younger and hauling around a giant generator is not what I call fun or very practical. These units only way 44 LBS each. Makes them much more practical to pull in and out of the TT. They also have a smaller footprint so that they fit in the pass through storage without a problem. It gives me the flexibility to pull one out for light duty operations when I do not need the A\C or furnace. And, if need be, I can whip out the second unit easily and with the Sidewinder cable, hook them up in parallel for 30+amps of power.

I also bought them because it gave me some redundancy, lowers the overall operating hours on each of them, provides a very neighborly sound level of 51dB each at idle, and a clean power source for delicate electronic equipment like computers, televisions, and audio equipment.

They are pricey but the Yamaha units have a great reputation and have features the equivalent Honda does not have like fuel shut off valve and a gas gauge. Important, because with today's ethanol, you really want to run your units dry before storing them again.

One more note. If you run a Progressive Industries EMS, you will need to make an RV plug. This is basically a $2 part from the big box store and you run a wire from the neutral to the ground. This prevents an open circuit error and allows you to run your EMS without issues. You only need one, when running your generators in parallel.

I got a great deal through yamahagenerators.com. It came with the Sidewinder cable, two DC charging cables, motor oil, and fuel treatment. They shipped for free and no sales tax.

Hope one finds this review useful and I look forward to spending more time on this forum.

I have a Yamaha E2400i. Absolutely love. It's 11 years old with no issues. I used it on our boat running the AC, microwave. Can't go wrong with a Yamaha or Honda generators with investor technology.

We also have this kit and love it. Have used them for boondocking and to run the home frig and freezer during power outage. Bought ours at the local Yamaha motorcycle dealer for only a few bucks more and to support a local businessman/friend. Good units!

Mine are 3 years old. Very happy with them. Try to run them monthly for 1/2 hour or so.

Very happy with mine as well, the only thing I've noticed is they are sensitive to the oil being topped right up. If it surges or is hard to start I make sure it's filled right up to the lip of the cap.

Thanks for the info Fairenatic. As someone interested in getting an inverter/generator and still looking and gathering data at this point; why would one get 2 of these? Getting the larger model EF2800 is almost half the cost and much lighter thant the 2 mentioned here and provides enough power to run the A/C.

What are the advantages?

Thanks for educating me...

The 2800 probably weighs in around 140-150 pounds. They are no fun to move around, my buddy has a EU3000i Honda, it takes two people to move it. The 2800 should start a 13.5K a/c but you're pushing your luck. With the two 2000's in parallel you should have enough to start a 15K a/c unit. Not going to run the a/c? Just take one. Much easier to handle two 44 pound units than one 150 pound unit.

I just went to the Yamaha site. That 2800i is an open frame generator and loud---up to 67dBa. Not a campground friendly unit. The closed noise suppressed 3000 is 136 lbs. That 2800 is much lighter than I expected!

I'm still on the Honda/Yamaha fence. But either way it will be a pair of 2000's.

Very nice review thank you.

Utah: The EMS he is talking about is a progressive industries EMS:\
Progressive Industries RV Surge and Electrical Protection industry lea

They protect the RV's electrical system from surges, miss wired poles and low voltage.. Check their page for info. If you search on here you will find posts of people that got burned by bad power poles at CGs.

Medic: the reason for two, 45lbs EACH not 75lbs. Yes one is easier to use than needing to parallel two but then he would need to move around 75lbs, prob 80 with fuel vs 50lbs. You'll also get more power (4000 watts surge) when needed. I have a Honda setup and did the same thing with 2. I also like the redundancy of two... Two is one.. One is none in the words of Clint Smith!

According to the website, the 2 purchased and reviewed here are 44 pounds each. The single 2800 is 68 pounds. It is 20 Lbs lighter!!

80lbs vs 50 lbs can be a big difference...

You're missing the point here. Yes, the one 2800 is lighter than the two 2000's combined. However you don't have to pick the 2000's up at the same time, so you only move 44lbs at a time. Again, that 2800 is an open frame generator. It's loud. If all you do is boondock and want to listen to it, that's fine. In a campground you won't be making any friends with the neighbors. The one in the same noise class as the 2000's is the 3000i.

The EF2800i weighs 68 LBS making it 24lbs heavier. It also has a larger footprint. And it is a LOT louder. 68dB

I can carry 44 lbs at a time. It is not about the combined weight. I also will not need both all the time. Just the summer months when I run the AC.

Not sure where you are getting you pricing but the 2800 retails for $540 more per unit ($1529 vs. $989). Not a savings when you total the power of two against one. (2800 vs 4000 peak). More importantly, one gets the full 30 amps with the two units. The 2800 wont get there (20-23amps)

I paid $1826, to my door total with everything listed above.

If you do not need the added security of redundancy, a lighter product, smaller footprint, neighbor friendly design, or the extra power, then the EF2800i would be a great choice.

Exactly! I don't care about combined weight, I care about what I have to move by hand!

Did not realize the 2800 was an open frame, only looked at the weight when I responded.. Yeah, that will get you hung at the CG running that! DB rating is not linear it is exponential.. 68 dB is MUCH louder than the 46

Energy Management System or Surge Protection

I think the site can explain all the features faster and better, but in a nut shell, you can not trust the power coming into your RV to be safe for your appliances\equipment. Severe damage or outright destruction can occur if the pedestal you are hooking up to is faulty. A Progressive Industries EMS is cheap insurance and has a lifetime warranty. And, should anything fail, it is modular in design so you only have to replace the protective component inside the box. No hassles of uninstalling the unit and\or sending it back to the manufacturer for warranty work.

The Best

I have had the 2 EF2000is setup for about 2 1/2 yrs and currently have about 850 hrs on each one. I would not have any other. I recommend that you buy the hr/tach meter for each one. They will cost you about $50 each. Well worth the cost in tracking performance and scheduled maintenance. Kind of a PITA to install if you have big hands other than that would not be without them. One thing to watch for is the oil sensor is very sensitive. If one of your units ever does not want to start the first thing to check is the oil level. It needs to be filled all the way to the edge of the filler neck.
