Do I Need A Truck Bedlner

Will I need some sort of bedlner in the bed of the truck to help protect it from the camper? If yes can you recommend what to use and where to get it. Thanks.

Would recommend LineX. Just don't watch them install it. I had brand new truck that I had done and before I left the dealer they were out grinding off all the paint in the bed. Arghhh.

Looked great when they were done and still looked great when I sold the truck 6 years later. Have them do top of the bed rails if you get it done.

Should be able to google for dealers in your area. Also can check on Line X (and Rhino Liner). After research I decided on the Line X and was never sorry I did.

Oregon, Besides the LineX did you put any other type of protection down in the bed of the truck before placing the camper into it? The Palomino dealer I’m speaking with is talking about some product to put down, I think it’s like a rubber pad of some type. $650! One of the workers grabbed me and said I could do it for under $100 if I bought the product myself online but I can’t recall the product he was referring to. He said it’s used in horse trailers, is one inch thick, and I think he mentioned it was a rubber type material. Any thoughts?

I paid $200 for the two rubber mats...one for the bed and one for the tailgate.

Bought them both from the shop where I bought the topper for my truck before I switched to a 5'ver!

Probably all you'll need!

I’m very ocd about my truck bed so take my advice with a grain of salt. I have used Linex with great success on my last three trucks. I even had my dually fender wells coated with it. In addition, I top the bed with a rubber bed mat when not towing our fifth wheel. I bought some cheap horse stall mat and cut it to fit when towing the 5th wheel. This stuff comes in 3’x4’ sheets at Tractor Supply. Good luck! Rick

I'd definitely do the spray in bed liner. Its well worth the money. I've had this done to the last 5 trucks I've owned. Last 3 I had factory spray in liners as the cost was the same as having done by an out side source. Later RJD

Rhino or LineX. The dealer had some local paint shop do my GMC and the edges are starting to peel up. Had LineX on my Silverado and beat the crap out of it hauling gravel....washed it out and it still looked great.

To answer your original question... do you NEED a bedliner of some sort to install a truck camper?.... no you dont.
Do not let the dealer sell you something don't want.

Will you protect the finish on your truck bed if you do install some kind of liner?... sure!

I had a truck camper in two different trucks without bedliners and in one with. Other than a few rub marks from sliding the camper in and out, there really wasn't any difference.

You've received good advice about spray in liners and mats. If you want your truck bed to stay pristine, put something in it.

I've always used my trucks as trucks so a few scratches and scrapes didn't really matter.

Baysailor...this is typical of the "Stealer" trying to upsell you on something you really don't need, or if you do need or want, charging a ridiculous price for it. You have received good advice here about getting your own product or doing the spray in. I have had both Rhino and factory spray in, both have performed equally well. The recommendation for spraying the top of the box rails is a very good one, glad I did that to mine!

Linex

I would always recommend Linex. I had purchased brand new a 2003 Dakota and within the first month had Linex installed. I sold it last year after 14 years and the liner still looked brand new, it was rusting below but the inside of the bed was still solid. I would never install a plastic molded liner, after a couple years take one out and see where it rubs the paint away, starts rust, and never drys out, You will rust your bed faster than living here in Wisconsin with the salt. Spend the $ and get it done and like recommended go over the top rails. Happy Camping!!

X2 on getting the bed rails sprayed...Her is a pic of my old Chevy 2500 with the Rhino liner with the bed rails sprayed and the Bully stake pocket retractable rings installed they come in handy when you need to tie something down.

Going With Line-X

Thanks for the responses. I have Line-X in my F-150 now and am happy with that so I'll stick with it. Appreciate the help.

Just curious. How did they "grind" all the paint in the bed off? Sounds like that alone would take a complete day. Also sounds a little crazy.

I also recommend going with LineX, it seems to be the most durable. Drop in bed liners directly on metal wear through the paint and can cause extensive rust problems. They are however a cheap fix for used car dealers to cover dents and scratches in the truck bed.

When I had mine done they used an oscillating D/A sander.

It took them the better part of 4 hours to remove bolts/parts and sand and prep the bed before spraying. This is necessary for proper adhesion of the liner.

I almost cried watching as I went straight from the dealer to the Line-X place.

I remember when I first got my truck brand new...

I was so worried about getting a scratch in the bed...it was so shiny and new!

Then...a tiny little scratch...OH NO!

Ran out the next day and bought the rubber mat...OK for now...phew!

But they were out of stock for the tailgate mat...better be careful!

Two weeks after purchase and less than 1000 miles on it...$3000 in hail dings!

Can barely see them...never got them fixed and they are still there 4 1/2 years later.

Anyway...after a year or so the scratches started building up and I finally had a life-changing realization...

It's a truck, for crying out loud...

Get over it...a truck will get scratches, no matter how hard you try to not get them!

Especially when RV'ing!
