Newbie...SS1500
Just registered, new to forum, not new to truck campers....
Have a Lance (for sale) bought a 2015 SS 1500 Backpack to replace it (my Lance is too high to access my hunting / recreational land via fire road.
I haul it on a '96 Ford F350 4x4 diesel crewcab SRW 1 ton long bed (same as the Lance was hauled on.
Camper weight is a non issue, my Lance is/was 500 pounds heavier (loaded).
Nice unit and the folks at Forest River in Colon, Michigan are nice too. Been to the factory to pick up an access door..
I need to install an access door in the lower side of the camper so I can access the bed between the side of the camper and the bed wall so I can put my chainsaw and fuel in there (I always carry a chainsaw, tools, jack and assorted items in case of an offroad issue, I 'camp' about 1.5 miles from a paved road off a seasonal road on my property).
Went to the factory (it's 2 hours from me) and picked up a matching cabinet door to install in the lower section, plus a cut to size sheet of the material the camper lower is covered with
I added a pure sine wave inverter with wired remote plus a Champion 2000 watt inverter generator (that fits very nicely on the floor in the camper), and a Carefree Bag awning (fits in the included awning rail on the Backpack.
Bought it last winter from Outpost RV in Middlebury, Indiana, nice folks too. I didn't pick it up until this spring and I've used it 4 times now, all on my property. Not a campground person though we do plan on going to the UP next year and doing some primitive type camping.
I like the lower Cg and my 350 Ford don't even know it is in the bed.
One issue I had to address was entrance height. My truck is 6 over stock and 350's are high to begin with so getting in and out presented an issue. My wife solved it with a retractable ladder from Walmart. We use the ladder to get in and out plus I use it to secure the top latches, no way can I reach them from the ground.
Fit and finish is excellent (I can compare it to my Lance) and everything functions as it should. I may install the Titan remote jack heads at some point, but my cordless drill and the drill adapter makes pretty short work of loading and unloading it.
I stays in the garage when not in use, fits nicely through my overhead door (on a wheeled dolly)
Did I say it's a nice unit? It is.
