Generator +50 AMP plug

Our 2019 Forrest river salem has a 50A power wire cause we have the option for a 2nd AC unit which we dont have...so its running 30A ...
We're looking at the Predator 3500 inverter...
I've seen adapters for 30amp ... is it ok to use a 50A adapter on inverter... I just called Harbor freight and the girl said I assume so...haha...

Yes. It's even OK to use a 50 amp converter on an RV that is actually running 50 amps. In either case, the it will drop out when the current gets to high anyway.

It doesn't automatically chose 30 amp. If you have a 4 wire plug it is 50 amp to your main breaker panel. If you have a 3 wire plug you have a 30 amp service and nothing more. You will need a dog bone for the generator @ 30 amps. It does not have a 50 amp receptacle.

to traveling fools: just a clarification.

as i understand what you said you have a 50 amp shore power cable. it will have 4 blades on the make end (2 hots, a neutral, and a ground). your main power panel will have a 50 amp main breaker (two 50 amp breakers connected together). your individual branch circuits will probably a combination of 20 and 15 amp circuit breakers protecting them, with some of them powered by one hot leg and the others by the other. each of the hot legs is capable of providing up to 50 amps.

you say because you do not have a 2nd a/c you are running at 30 amps. you may not be using more than 30 amps but there is nothing in you setup that limits your usage to only 30 amps if you are plugged into a 50 amp shore power pedestal. if you were to plug into a 50 amp pedestal and turn on the a/c, the water heater on electric, the battery converter, the microwave, and maybe an electric hair dryer i suspect they would all work. the same combination on a 30 amp power source would probably trip the 30 amp circuit breaker on the power source.

Some generators have a four pole 30 amp outlet. Mine has that, a 30TT 3 pole, and two 15 amp house outlets. To get full output, I have to use 30TT or four pole outlet. The 15 amp outlets have a single p/b circuit breaker.

Same with us. It's no big deal. Some generators will have the "RV" style of 30amp plug. Check yours. Others will have a 4 prong "generator style" 30amp plug, which ours has. You just get the dogbone adapter to plug 50amp to 30amp depending on the plug you have on your generator. If you have not bought one yet, take a pic of your generator plugin and ask the guy down at the store where you can get the adapter. We had to order it on amazon.

cheers!

James

Also there has been testing done on a variety of the inverter generators and none of them actually can put out 50A. The highest is about 46A.
Also I have first hand experience with the 50A to 30A. If you run the A/C and the water heater on electric and then someone decides to put a cup of tea into the microwave you're going to trip a 30A pedestal

This question is directed to Cavie and Chickdoe. My trailers are both 30 amp, so I haven't seen a 50 amp panel face-to-face.

Chickdoe wrote: "two 50 amp breakers connected together." Why would they pin them together? There are no 240v appliances across both hots. If a breaker pops, the shared neutral will only be carrying current from the other phase. Is there a rational reason why the two 50 amp breakers are pinned together, or is it just custom?

They are pinned together because the Ped delivers 50 amps @ 240 volts and the NEC says that both legs will disconnect at the same time.
