How often should I change engine oil & filter?

How often should I change oil of 4.0 Onan generator?

What else should I check/change, such as trans oil, rear axle oil and what about grease. Do we grease em anymore?

Do most Ford dealerships provide these motor home services?

Need all the help I can get. Thanks in advance guys. Trying to learn

I change mine in between 3500 and 4500 miles along with the filter. Generator 25 to 50 hours depending on how long it sits. I use Rotella 15W/40 oil. That's just,me. You could go by the manufacturer. I only use Ford Blend oil and their filter.

I would follow the advice in the owner’s manuals for the Ford chassis and for the generator. If you don’t have those manuals, I suggest you search one for a source of them. You can probably download both for free.

If you ask about oil changes on a forum, the thread will run to a hundred posts, and you will get 99 different opinions and in the end you will be no closer to knowing what to do. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

A quick look at the 2005 Ford E450 manual said to change engine oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals with 5w-20 synthetic blend oil. I read it over quickly, so read it yourself before taking my word for it.

If someone else thinks they know more about the vehicle than the manufacturer, they will probably give you different advice.

You say you "acquired" this unit. If from an rv dealer ask them who they recommend for chassis service.

If you dont have a dealer I would recommend you find one.

Only select Ford dealerships service motorhome chassis, around larger cities there's usually at least one but your rv dealer may do chassis service and if not their service director should be able to recommend one for you.

Follow your operator's manuals for service.

In general, all oil changes should be done annually or per the schedules in your manuals.

The Owner's Manual for my 2012 Ford 6.8L V-10 engine in my Class A says to change the engine oil and filter every 6 months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first.

As for the Onan 5500 kw Generator, my Class A Owner's Manual says to change the oil and filter every 150 operating hours but at least once per year.

In my experience, most Ford car/truck dealerships don't want to mess with a large motor home because they are too big to fit in their service bays. I was fortunate to find a place here in North Texas that had the capability to lift my 37 ft Class A in order to fully inspect all the running gear, etc.when I first bought it.

From reading several model year’s owner’s manuals, it seems Ford has changed the recommended oil viscosity and perhaps the change interval for the V10, over the years. I suggest that the OP consult the manual for their particular model and year.

As far as the generator manual check for the nameplate inside the generator enclosure for your correct model number.


Mine happens to be a Generac QP40 or QuietPac QP40.


You can go to google and search the manufacturer (Generac) and model number and bring up a list of results.

I was able to download the free manual versions and saved them.


Suggestion:
Take your digital camera or phone and take pictures of every nameplate you can find on the appliances and equipment in the RV.
Save them to your computer. That way you can look something up without having to go to the rig and find it.



I located the manuals for my rig using google and saved them to a dedicated directory.

I've been using synthetic oil for about 30 years. I change the oil once a year regardless of mileage, although I seldom put more than 12,000 miles on in a year. I've never had an engine problem. They've done tests on big rig diesels that ran a million miles on synthetic oil with only filter changes. I know people who still change their oil every 3000 miles, but oils and engines are much better now.

It’s not likely to make any difference, but the OP should check their actual chassis model year and use the Ford manuals for that particular model year. Even though the RV is a 2005 model, the chassis might be a 2004. Again, it’s minor. The only case where it would matter is if Ford made changes between those model years.
