Murphy Bed Re-engineering

To make a long story short, the Murphy bed in my FR Mini Lite was engineered by a squirrel. It detached from one of the side mounts. In a previous post I described the redesigning/rebuilding process.

When I finished the reconstruction and went to attach the gas lift struts, one was frozen. I tried to find struts at local auto parts stores but no automotive applications use 100 lb. struts.

The struts are Suspa C16-08054 20” 100 lb. I found them on Amazon at $19.19 2 day delivery. I’m going to replace both struts.

You might want to check the strut I went to replace them on a rig and thought one was frozen when actually one was weak and I could move it and the other was charged as it should be I just wasn't strong enough to move it.

Thanks, Sea Dog, I thought of that and had several potential Sumo wrestlers try it. It’s frozen.

THE END OF THE MURPHY BED SAGA. After reconstructing the Murphy bed support system I finally got the gas struts back on. My dealer told me they compress them to the target length by pressing them against concrete with all their weight. Then, they said the struts would remain compressed. NOT! The gas springs don’t operate that way - they return to full length.

I called Forest River and they told me they attach the lower end, push the bed up and compress the upper end BY HAND and push the socket onto the ball. HAHA NOT!!! Superman, maybe but not an average mortal.

After attaching the lower end, I looped a ratchet strap over both ends ratcheted up compression about 1” and raised the bed. A little tweaking of the ratchet, a couple whacks with a rubber mallet and SUCCESS!

These Suspa C16-08054 20” 100 lb. gas springs cannot be compressed by hand.
