Paint Damage from Concrete

On vacation, was coming off I-29 at Rt 2 outside Nebraska City, enroute to Teton and Yellowstone.
Left lane blocked for road work, was in right lane. Idiot working, cutting fresh concrete with a huge wet saw. No traffic workers stopping traffic while work in progress. Saw operator looked directly at us and started the saw....spewed wet concrete dust all over front of rig.
Unable to pull over for about 5 miles by which time concrete had dried. Front was covered in dried concrete spots.
Had to scrape windshield with simple razor blade, but front end components, headlights, mirrors, bumper, grill valance, ruined as nothing I have tried will remove concrete. Not even getting into paint on drivers side and front end/cap.
Have started claim with Nebraska but will be 3 weeks before we return home.
Oh, by the way...stopped in Lander Wy where it's snowing.
Ahhhh....great beginning to the 2019 season.

Use muriatic acid. I don't think it will damage paint. You can get it from pool supply companies

A week ago....you would've had a LONG detour around that area. That just opened back up since being closed in Mid March due the billions of dollars of damage done in this area from the flooding. That section wasn't even suppose to open till July, but they got it done way ahead of schedule. I for one...an truly grateful for how fast those workers were able to get that back open. Sorry for your situation.

Try using a Clay Bar. You can get a kit from O'Rielly's, Meijers,Walmart etc in auto section. Make sure you check to see if it works on fiberglass. Follow instructions and keep bar wet, and don't drop it. I use it on my cars to remove paint over spray, bugs, tar. The finish is smooth as glass. Works great on windshield too. Follow directions.

You made his day. Some people love destroying what others have that they can’t have.
Sorry it happened.

Back-Set Concrete Dissolver. It is what they use to clean concrete trucks with.

Make sure you apply new wax if you do manage to get it off. I would bet whatever method or chemical you have to use will totally strip off any existing wax.

I would just try plain White Vinegar and and a soft brush, avoiding any "scrubbing" action. Lay the Vinegar on and let it deal with the dried concrete slurry, continuing to bathe the area with fresh Vinegar. The acetic acid in the vinegar should react with the "lime" base of the concrete and help break the bond. Any scrubbing will just scratch up the paint. Vinegar is cheap and contains about 4% Acetic Acid. Stuff is benign enough you can soak your feet in it if you have fungus.

First thing we tried was vinegar. Was able to hit a WalMart half hour after it happened. 2 gallons didn't do squat. Gad to scrape windshield with a razor.
Have googled the concrete dissolver and will be trying it out as soon as I can locate some. On the road for the next 3 1/2 weeks to go yet.
Bought some muriatic acid and may try some on an area like painted wheel to see if it works.
Filing a claim with Nebraska DOT as their worker was at fault. Have dash cam to back up. Without paint, just replacement parts like headlights, mirrors, grill, bumper, facia, ect, is at around $2000.00,
Not going to worry about it now...don't want to let it ruin trip.
Enroute to Teton tomorrow and Yellowstone West Entrance next week.

Amazon carries it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0763JW283...4&ref=aa_pcomp

If you know where you are going to be on the date they say they can deliver (campground address) order and meet up with it.

Just an option if you choose.

Not contradicting the other poster...as it chaps me when I receive.

Be careful with the clay bar as I feel it will pick up the abrasive and use it again.

Agree...won't be using a clay bar as that would just rub the concrete into the paint.
Bought a couple of bottles of the Concrete Dissolver TiTanMike posted about...delivered to our next stop via Amazon.
Cheap enough to give it a try before I start to replace parts or paint.

I would definitely NOT use muriatic acid. That is diluted hydrochloric acid and even though diluted, will eat through many materials. I use it for removing plating on nuts and bolts before welding and for removing rust on car bodies and car parts. The fumes are toxic too.

Sounds like that dash cam just paid for itself and then some!!!! Hard to argue with video.

Well, in a campground outside the west entrance to Yellowstone for a week. Had some concrete dissolver delivered here and it seems to work, but will take a bit of time...putting off till we get home.
Neb. DOT denied claim as they traced the work area and found it was a sub-contractor doing the work, so they forwarded our info to the contractor.
Like there going to jump right on it.....riiiiight!!!
Anyway, great time in Teton and looking forward to Yellowstone. Drove thru today and not too crowded yet.
Not going to let the damage ruin our trip.

Did they give you the subcontractor information? I would call them and talk to their risk management department or find out who their insurance carrier is and contact them. Otherwise they will likely ignore it until someone complains.

If you have full coverage, you should let your insurance company handle it. Repair will be done correctly and they’ll go after the sub contractor.

State's are pretty good about making sure contractors and their sub's are properly insured when working on their projects.

When a claim is filed with either the claim is usually forwarded to the insurance carrier and they get an adjuster on the claim without a lot of delay.

What happened to you is not unusual around highway maintenance. I recall an incident in Seattle where a bridge was getting painted over a downtown portion of I-90. Somehow globs of paint were rained down on vehicles traveling underneath. Painting contractor set up a "Cleaning Station" near the site and they cleaned as much paint from vehicles as they could. Other drivers merely filed claims with their own insurance companies who in turn went after the paint contractor's insurance company for compensation. A daily occurrence int he Insurance business.

As they say, "Sooner or later---------".
