red switch

Hi I am new to the forum and this is my first post, Please be gentile with me. I have a 2003 rockwood model 8272S 27' travel trailer that I am very happy with. I have a question that the book does't seem to answer or has too many answers. On the front outside bathroom wall their are 4 controls Heat and air, tank uassage, water heater, and one other like the water heater with a red light switch when on. This can be for charging the battery with a converter, electric heating for the water tank, or heating the pipes and tanks for temperatures under 44 degrees? not sure what this switch is for. Does anybody have any answers.

It sounds like your water heater DSI switch: You'll turn it on when using the water heater on propane gas. When the switch is on, the DSI is what lights the gas flame to heat the water, instead of an always burning pilot light. You might see this switch incorporated into a larger control panel along with other switches, or it may be set alone, like the one on top in the picture below. Here is some history on the DSI.

  1. History
    • Direct spark ignition was invented by the Fenwal Company. Before DSI, water heaters were turned on by lighting the pilot flame outside the RV.
    Function

    • The light switch activates the burner, which heats the water until it reaches the set temperature. Once this temperature is reached, the burner goes out, restarting only when the heated water is used.
    Benefits

    • Direct spark ignition is easier and safer than using a pilot flame; the DSI circuit board closes the gas valve automatically as soon as the set temperature is reached.
    Warning

    • Make sure there is water in the heating tank before using the water heater for the first time by connecting the RV to a water source, checking to see if the bypass valve is open and turning on the on-board water pump.
    Types

    • Suburban and Atwood are the two largest producers of RV DSI water heaters, most in the six- to 10-gallon range.

Sounds like they are saying that the water heater is accounted for already.

Can you see the bottoms of your holding tanks to see if you have heated tanks? Should be rubber pads stuck to the bottoms with 2 little wires going to them? If you do my guess would be that's what the switch is for.

it's always advisable to post pics of what you're asking members to identify.

Being an 03 doesn't help matters as there's less of a pool to draw from .
Possibly a previous owners add on as well.
