Spun lug nut

I took wheel off to get a leaky valve stem fixed and went to put the wheel back on and ran into a problem. I always spin the lugs on with an impact til the lug seats in rim, then lower trailer down and use torque wrench to tighten the lugs. I never tighten with impact.

Got to my 3rd lug and was tightening down and I was about to the point when the wrench will click and the lug started to turn easily. Upon inspection the lug split!

Now I can not get it off, the exterior of the lug spins on itself. It seems like the lug is two pieces. I know the lug is tight and I'm safe to tow, but the problem is if I have a blowout or flat I can not get the wheel off.

What to do???

From the pic I would say the lug nut has a cap on it. I seen this on vehicle lug nuts also. Try removing the cap from the lug nut. May have to use a set of vice grips to remove it.

After looking at the pic, it seems the socket was not on the lug all the way, only half way. Maybe if I beat the socket on the entire lug and it may back off.

Chrome cap.
Take a chisel and hammer and start to peel the cap off.

This is a common problem on automobiles.
Even though you just spin the nuts on and slightly tighten the wheel, the hammering of an impact beats the thin chrome cap and stretches it to the point you can't get a socket on.

You are going to have to get that chrome 'cap' off the nut and then use a slightly smaller socket to remove the lug nut underneath.

You might be able to beat a socket on and get it off but like others have said, split the cap and remove is your best bet.

They make aftermarket solid lug nuts. (chrome plated/no cap)
Buy yourself enough to replace the others as well.

This thread may help with pics and ways to get the veneer off.

There are tons of stainless steel lug nuts on Ebay.
Be careful as there are also many with the same design as the one
you spun but there are also solid stainless.

I put a set of solid stainless lug nuts on my last rig at the same time I
put on a new set of tires and had them balanced.
Then I let momma take me to an RV show and wound up trading it in!
I'm sure I didn't get a penny more than I would have with the old nuts and rubber on there....

I replaced my original crappy veneer lugs with these, they seem very nice for the price:

I suggest you start your lug nuts by hand.

My F-150 came with those crappy tin-helmet lug nuts - I upgraded to Gorilla nuts last year and I really like them.

Thanks for the replies, just got back from a camping trip without wheel issues. With my luck I would have a blowout with the screwed up lug and not be able to remove it on side of road.

I had time to mess with it today. I took the 3/4" socket and tapped it onto the damaged lug and was able to back it off.

I went ahead and pried off the cap and verified the lug size under the cap is 18mm, maybe that will help someone.
