Strange smell!

A little delicate subject, a bit stinky! I am getting a very strong, pungent smell from the bathroom. The blank tank has been cleaned thoroughly, three times and doesn't seem to be coming from the tank. Did the smell test close to toilet opening to confirm. The smell is like strong urine, chemical like. Have checked everywhere, even under the belly. Can't seem to find anything that would cause this. Any ideas?

It could be that the toilet is leaking. These toilets have a plastic ring (like the wax ring in a home toilet) that can go bad and cause a leak at the base.

Thought I read about some toilets have a defect and will trap waste water in them, not sure the model tho. A quick search may help

Also you may want to look for an anti-siphon trap vent under the bathroom sink. When they go bad it can stink up the place. Replacement is an easy fix.

It is probably your toilet. There have been many threads about the Dometic Model 300 toilet. They have a defect where liquids (urine water) gets trapped between the bowl and the base.

Look on the side of your toilet by the flush pedal and get the make, model number, serial number (use your phone camera). If it is a model 300, call Dometic and see if it is one in the recall.

Do this ^. You probably have the Dometic 300 that has a seal between the top and bottom half that fails and allows urine and water to collect. Sometimes you can squeeze phone camera along the back and see the issue. Here’s a pic of what it might look like. Click image for larger version

X2 Dometic 300. If that is what you have, contact Dometic.

Thanks everyone! Problem solved. Did have a 300 series toilet, bought a new one and replaced. Now will try and deal with Dometic. I was concerned with the new toilet having the same problem but the reviews were pretty good and the sell person assured us of quality, so we replaced it with a Dometic 320 unit. Installation took 15 minutes! One and done, hopefully!

Good choice on the 320. An actual ‘adult’ toilet.

Can just the seal be replaced or must the entire toilet be replaced? We have a 3 year old unit.

I had read somewhere that the Dometic 300 toilet can not be disassembled and the seal replaced. I believe it was in the owners manual someone posted here in the forums.

I just spoke with Dometic sanitation division 800-321-9886 I also have a 300 model toilet experiencing this smell. They are not referring to it as a recall but were very nice on the phone. They offered me an upgrade to the 310 model for $50 and $75 for the 310 with a slow close lid. I have not measured the rough in space but she said you need 9&5/8" from center drain to the back wall for the 310 to fit.
