I have no experience other than having spent a lot of time observing my welder-uncle as a kid, and can say the same. The tack welds on the upper piece feels solid, though, and has no apparent cracks. (The lower bits of melted aluminum aren't even a tack weld.)
I think it's as secure as when it left the factory. That's not good, but seems adequate.
