Which is better, a PI surge suppressor that you hard wire or a portable one?
I have portable 50amp PI surge suppressor, if something was to happen at the pedestal then my 50amp cable is protected. If it is hard wired then the cable will be ruined, 50amp cables aren't cheap

I have a hard wired which I like because I don't have to worry about a place to store portable one or it getting damaged. I can just pull in and plug in. And I don't have to go outside to read readout.

I like not having to think about it- my hardwired one is always there. I don't have to connect it. I don't have to move it. I'm protected no matter what.
And, I hate to admit it- I wouldn't terribly mind if my 50amp cable got buggered, it would give me a chance to upgrade to one of those super flexible ones.

I have a portable at our seasonal site. Reason I went with a portable is if something happens I'd rather not have it 'blow' inside the camper garage when we're not there.
I built a box for it and use a locking cable to secure it to the pedestal.

I use both. I have used an external for 4 yrs and never had it stolen. I guess it depends on where you camp. There is enough in life to worry about without worrying about trivial things that can be replaced. You can't lock them securely outside, so why bother? Bolt cutters will cut any cable or chain you might put on them.

I've found campers for the most part are some of the nicest (and presumably) most honest people around. I've left all kinds of things outside and never had issues. I do have a hard wired unit, but I wouldn't worry if I didn't.
My friend bout a portable and forgot to lock his compartment. Lost it coming home along with a bunch of stuff.

I was considering hard wiring in a PI 50amp. If something were to happen to the power, would it "blow" in the camper? Is there any fire hazard to having a protector? I wouldn't think the protector would be a fire hazard when it does it job, but your comments have me wondering now.

Why would an EMC blow? Its job is to sense changes in power input and instantly shut down feed to your unit. Unless you have it wired incorrectly (in that case I would think it wouldn't work at all) or filled with hydrogen gas?

I think I want a hardwired unit.
And I think I'll have issues trying to wire it up!!!! (knowing me, the odds are HIGH). That alone makes the portable attractive. Having it hardwired seems better though.

hey, if I can do it, anyone can. Absolutely no electrical experience. And PI has great customer service, they helped me when I had issues during my install.

I am not the one concerned about having the unit in my trailer when it blows, someone else said that. I am just trying to see why / if that is a concern .

It's not a concern as to doing damage, but what can happen is that a strong surge can render the unit useless and disable power to your camper. Good news is that it did what it's suppose to do, bad news, you don't have power to your camper. I do remember something about a bypass in the unit though.

Someone posted pics of plugs installed inline so that if the unit goes out, you simply unplug it and reconnect the plus to each other. Seemed complicated to me plus an added expense, plus working with that 10 gauge wire was such a PIA I didn't bother. Nice idea though.

They have a online video how to install. If you don't feel comfortable installing I'm sure a local dealer will install for a price. I had mine installed within 45 min. Not hard.
