Whoa, the rusty undercarriage!!

Yikes, I just looked under my Sunseeker MH for the first time since I bought it (brand new) 4 weeks ago. The rust is shocking. Is this normal? Any recommendations to address it?

Is that road salt in the second picture? If so you might want to hose off the undercarriage. Might seem like counterproductive, but if it is salt, it will attract moisture and accelerate the damage.

I can't imagine where it would have salt from unless they drove it across the mountains to get it to California and didn't clean it afterwards. I'm in the Bay Area and haven't been anywhere near a salty road.

Normal for something that sat for a while. What is the build date on the chassis? It will be on the drivers door. It is possible it was driven from Indiana to the dealer in CA.

Looks like 11/16, so it's hardly old. Seems a bit irresponsible if they drove it over the mountains in winter and didn't clean it up afterwards.

Really not necessary when I'm here just looking for advice. I hope you have a nice day, Bob.

I don't think the rusted driveline will ever be a problem. I would get some decent black paint and get after it. I recommend some cardboard to minimize overspray.

People like you have no appreciation of Bob's comments. It was driven there btw. IOW, lighten up.... Probably was in Indiana for a while where road salt is common.

Looks pretty good underneath to me...

Will the pain my just make it look better or stop it from getting worse? I have an email out to my dealer to see if they can do something. We'll see if they step up.

He might laugh. That is about it. Driveshafts are usually not painted with anything and they have a coat of rust on them waiting for assembly at the factory.

I presume it's a Freightliner chassis. It was either built in Portland or Mexico, probably Mexico.

If it's a Ford chassis, it was built in Avon Lake, Ohio and shipped to Indiana.

The VIN will tell the build point.

You can thank cheap crappy chinese steal for that rust.

Go buy a gallon of fluid film and spray it on.

By the time any of that rots away the rest of the MOHO will be junk. I would get the underside cleaned and rustproof it.

The drive shaft & exhaust look normal to me. There are a few threads on this forum talking about rust under Sunseeker/Foresters so I crawled under mine. Sure enough some of the FR added frame was already rusting. As others did, couple cans of Rustoleum and it looks better now. Just hope it holds up.

It's a Ford E450.

Cars and trucks go decades without any problems from this type of rust issue....even here in the Midwest where the roads are salted in winter. Really nothing to be concerned with.
