Why are porch lights amber?

n00b's gotta ask... why are they amber on so many TT's?

I'm guessing it may have something to do with not attracting as many insects when it's on?

Supposed to be "bug lights". Nobody told the bugs though.

i think it's to cut down on the brightness level, so neighbors don't have a white light shining towards them.

The bugs see that color and smell citronella and let their friends know where the food is.

Or after a few adult beverages you know where to find the door.

Doug, sounds like you have had experience with the "adult beverages" and NOT finding the front door before. :O

Because you might get a lot of late night knocks on the your door if it was red!!!

I think I have to vote for allegedly not attracting as many bugs.

I was gonna say, because red was deemed a bad idea

In all sincerity, I remember yellow lights being called "bug lights" When I was growing up we had them for all the outside lights at the house. I believe that remains the wisdom.

Has anyone experimented with LED lights in their porch light? The wisdom seems to be that bugs are attracted to UV light. LED lights don't seem to produce UV light so they would likely attract few bugs??

Too add to this you could have a bicolor LED, clear and yellow.
