2013 Headlight operation

I’m considering upgrading to LED bulbs in my headlights. In preparation I thought I’d look and see which headlights operate on low, high and DRL.

The low beams work pretty much like I expected.

High beams surprised me. Only the inner light operates on high beam. I thought both or all 4 would operate on high beam.

DRL surprised me too. I thought they would be either the low or high beam on reduced voltage. Instead they are the normal low beams.

Help!

So you’re saying they are operating as they should.

The motorhome is the only vehicle I have that has four separate lights for low and high beams

All others are projector type

Yup, have the same on my Ford van and GMC Denali. One or the other, never both.

DRLs are a problem with aftermarket headlight upgrades.

Ford (Canadian versions) has a 8 volt feed when the headlights are off and vehicle is in drive or reverse. This gives you about 60% brightness when driving.

Many HID and LED's have optional modules to make DRLs work better, the cheaper ones usually just don't have the DRL function working.

Headlight flicker on DRL equipped vehicles when headlights are off is a sign of incompatible units.
