Question AC units

Has anyone heard anything about the AC units being closed systems as it pertains to freon? Someone in passing told me freon cannot be added to the system and when the time comes full AC replacement is required. Seems nuts to me. Could not a valve be added for much cheaper?

ALL RV AC units are closed systems. Have been for over 40 years. The COST to install (solder) schrader valves, find and fix either the leak in the lines or replace the component is prohibitive. You NEVER install line taps, they always leak . Under warranty, the AC maker replaces the complete upper unit if the freon has leaked out. At an average of $100 per hour labor and the cost of the parts, you would look at about $300 to $400 to repair a leak. For $300 or $400 more you could replace the upper unit. Doug
