Battery Charger not charging batteries fully

Having problems with the batteries not lasting over night with virtually every thing turned off... Had them plugged in for several days and have been running the gen to charge them.... when on bulk charge all batteries read 10 to 11 volts... suspect that its a problem with the charger. (it should read 13.8 volts across the terminal when charging ... right????) any help would be appreciated as we are on vacation for another 10 days....

if the rig is plugged in and you are only getting 10-11v readings, your charger is not working for some reason. you should be seeing 13-13.5v when on shore power.

did you check the breaker under the bed to make sure the inverter is getting shore power?

regardless of battery health, if the charger was working, it would be placing 13-13.5v to the terminals...

I'd say all depends, I'd first lift the neg. terminal off the battery (bank) and then measure output of the converter. Bad battery could easily drop 40 amps and cause the voltage drop.

A shorted battery cell (usually caused by lead flake internal to battery) can cause voltage readings in the 10-11 volt range. A shorted cell can also cause overnight discharge with no load applied. Miswired 6 volt cells can cause same problem. Since you can charge batteries, but not last overnight, the batteries should be checked first.

A bad battery will take the voltage at the charger's connection to the bank down?

Not the actual input voltage, the voltage read at the terminal, not charger voltage.

Batteries

jimwillis00

If your coach battery bank has been totally dischargerd I would suggest that after the charging problem is solved you make sure the batteries themselves are going to be ok. If they were totally discharged there is a possibility that they are damaged enough to warrent replacement or at least you might investigate the health of each of the cells.

Good Luck
