Camp chef grills

I am looking at the camp chef grills and their pizza oven. I would like to hook the grill up to the onboard propane. Would appreciate any feedback pro and con. Does it need a conversion kit?
Thanks

i have the 2 burner explorer camp chef. as a grill, it is one of the best propane burners out there and i did go to cooking school (but never worked in a professional kitchen) and have put these 2 burners through the paces.

it can simmer extremely well. it's does beautifully at high heat too. works great with their cast iron bbq top box and with a wok ring, can stir fry just like the pro kitchen units. it is susceptible to being blow out by gusts of wind on the low setting.

i have both the regulated portable tank hose and the 10' unregulated quick connect hose. the quick connect hose can fit into the quick disconnect fitting in the storage bay. however, i would reccomend getting a much longer hose as you use up alot of the hose length just dropping down and out of the bay. a 20' hose would be nice.

i do notice on my unit with the on-demand propane water heater, that i can notice the burners fluttering and a few times have cut out when the water heater was running. i had 3/4 tank full of propane when i noticed this. i only ran this set up once. i will try it again to see if it is indeed the on-demand water heater starving the propane flow to the camp chef.

but i always carry a portable tank just in case i need to setup the kitchen a little further away from the coach and the hose won't reach.

if you have a portable propane tank, you won't ever regret buying the camp chef!

Very nice review. Richly detailed. Thanks for doing it. I am not even in the market for one, but if I ever am, this will be helpful.

Just ordered the camp chef 2 burner explorer, the pizza oven and bbq box. Outdoorcooking.com has the 20%discount.
I make pizza and bread and have tried several stones with my weber but none get the high temp that is needed. I wish I had ordered it earlier so it would arrive before my trip to Sedalia but it will be a nice surprise when I get home.

I have a 3-burner Camp Chef Big Gas Grill. I bought the Camp Chef brand 10-foot extension and use it to quick connect to the 5-footer that came from the factory on our TT. I would agree wholeheartedly with Himcules that a 20-foot extension hose would be much better, but I never saw one when shopping for an extension. It would be nice to have more range to get further from the TT sometimes. Love the Camp Chef, which really has nice burners and stores nicely in the canvas bags that are sold for it.

I can not wait! Vern nice picture. 20 feet would be great but so far I have only seen 8 and 10 feet.
Happy 4th to all!!

Thanks
I have had camp chef grills for almost 10 yrs and they are hands down the best, most powerful grills i have ever owned. My first one was just replaced. It eventually rusted out due to my neglect more than the product. I am thinking about pizza oven as well. Keep it clean and put in bag, it should last a long time...

My 21FBRS came with a small grill that attaches to the outside wall of the tt. We tried it and it worked fine but it is not a high quality grill. Can other grills such as webers be made to attach to the rail on the side of my camper?

I wonder if I can hang a Weber Q100 on the side? It weighs about 30 lbs.

i would suggest against hanging a grill off the wall of a camper. there's alot of food splatter and grease that you will need to clean up afterwards. also when searing food, that's quite a bit of heat so close to the side walls, that would make me nervous about heat damage...

X2!! I too would be nervous about hanging a grill on the wall for the same reasons Himcules noted.

But the camper is designed for this. We used it several times and had no problems with
food splatter and grease on the camper. It is actually hung far enough away to prevent this. I think it is a great idea and just want a more quality grill.

X3. The thought of a fire SO close to the trailer freaks me out. What if there was a grease fire?

I also have the Camp Chef grill, and LOVE it...wish my burners at home were so powerful. We set it up at least 6' away from the camper, and just take a propane tank from the trailer (there are 2), to where the "outside kitchen" is set up, no big deal.

Hanging a grill from side of trailer...

Really that topic should not be in the mix of conversation about Camp Chef grills. As others have noted in this thread, the Camp Chef's have some very high output, and get much too hot to sit up against the TT. They are also heavy and incompatible with "hanging" on TT for that reason, too. The grills which come with campers often (if not always) operate on lower pressure/BTU output and are very lightweight, for good (safety and engineering) reasons.

X2 Vern, the heat/splatter is not a problem with the factory furnished grills, I would not consider another grill without it being the same or less weight. Would definitely consider an all stainless grill of the same weight tho'.

just picked up another camp chef. this time, the denali 3 burner combo with square dutch oven and lid/griddle. saw this at one of those overstock stores that buys from costco/samsclub... killer price for a brand new unit so now i have 2 camp chef grills and 5 high powered burners for the outdoor kitchen! now i can finally prepare proper meals while i'm away from my home kitchen
