Critter in my battery compartment

Went to move my rig today and noticed a nest of something in the battery compartment. It turned out to be a young possum. I finally got it out, but it danced around on top of the starter batteries and then on top of the house batteries. Don't know how it did not do itself in. Ended up using a awning pole to get it out. No possums were injured in the removal possess. 😂😂. Think I need to put some kind of fencing material in that compartment to keep critters out. This is the first time I have had something in there, that I know of. Loaded the compartment up with dryer sheets and Irish Spring Soap. The nest was not there when I looked three weeks ago. Anyone else had critters nesting in there? The rig is currently in Tennessee!!

The Possum heard you were headed to the Keys and thought it was vacation time.
I haven't had that issue but have had a fight with birds wanting to nest under the slides.
Some wire might be a good idea as you don't want any critters chewing on the wires.

Joe, Yes on the lower right side of the compartment. I believe it is for ventilation. Craig

Hi Craig
Glad it did not attach you. They can be nasty even when young. Was mama around. You might want to put only a heavy screen over the opening in the lower right corner. You need the ventilation for the hydrogen given off during the battery charging.

Don't understand why People Eating Tasty Animals would have a problem with that.

I guess the possums got a charge having their nest on the batteries.

Critter in my battery compartment

(Mmnsc Hi Craig
Glad it did not attach you.)

Me too, they're hard as the devil to get off once they attach! Seriously though, the easiest solution would probably be to cut a small piece of 1/4 or 1/2" hardware cloth to fit the bottom of the box, and lay it in there under the battery

Hardware cloth over all the holes. Now that something has lived there once the mice will find it too.

My battery boxes all seem to have perforated plugs in the ventilation holes.

Craig,

I would get some aluminium tape and screening (like for a screen door) and screen the opening.

That did the trick for us when critters were trying to nest in our A/C!
