Dash lights flash when dimmed

We have a 2017 Berkshire XLT 43B. When we first bought it new, the dimmer switch for the dashboard lights work fine, but now when I dim the lights they simply flash on and off until I dim them to the point they are they are completely off. As they are flashing, they are not getting dimmer. They just blink on and off during the dimming process. When they're fully illuminated they stay on just fine.

So right now our choices are full on, off, and "disco strobe light mode". Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks!

I seam to remember this discussed several months back. Temporary solution is to have lights full on. Freightliner is supposed to be working on a fix. You might want to search the forum.

Ditto here & Silver is right - Freightliner is "working on a fix" for now it is either full on or full off. Not sure, but this may only be a problem in the XLT

Yet another reason why I do not drive at night

While I know that this needs to get fixed, I also know that glaring instruments, especially for our aging eyes, are a royal PITA.

So, for an interim fix I suggest getting some of that self sticking flexible colored plastic which, I think, they sell at the Office supply for putting on computer screens?

Figure the diameter and cut some nice circles..... apply and remove in seconds.

As an afterthought, if you can't find the soft stuff you could also use "gels" these are colored sheets for stage lighting and readily available on Amazon. You could pick your color! Although not soft, they are easily cut with scissors and would, I think, stay in place just fine.

Great idea! Yesterday, our dimmer switch decided to start working properly. No idea why it will work sometimes and other times it strobes the lights. Seems like a computer circuit malfunction to me.

Speaking of malfunctions -- any of you newer units get the recall for the incorrectly routed power steering hose?

Apparently it includes 2016-2017 XBR, XCL, XCM, and XCR models.

Not yet. If I get it I'll squeeze in an oil change with it.....

Anybody know if FL has come up with a solution? On my 2018 XLT the instrument lights go on and off when the headlights or windshield wipers are on. Tried the dimmer switch to turn off the lights when on in daylight but the instrument lights keep coming back on. The lights on the toggle switches are fine, they do not blink only the instrument lights. Fiddled under the dash to see if there is a loose wire or ground but could not get the light to blink It seems only while driving. Very annoying. Any suggestions?

While at the FMCA rally in Indianapolis I questioned Freightliner about the issue. They said the "light bar" on the dash needed to be reprogrammed. 2 technicians came to the Moho and plugged a computer into the OBD port and reprogrammed it. It took about 20 minutes. So far it looks like it worked.

There is a rocker switch on the left side console near driver window. Pushing rocker down dims dash lights , pushing rocker up makes dash lights brighter. Flashing of dash lights means they are turned off.

YES. I have the same problem: 2016 XLT43A. Drives me crazy.. I keep them on full bright and ok.. we dont drive much at night so not a huge issue but should be fixed.

That is fantastic to hear! I had heard it was a software problem but you were the first one to actually confirm it. For now I just drive with them on full brightness, but it sure would be nice to dim them just a little bit. They will work about 25% of the time when I try to dim them. The rest of the time they just strobe.

Another light related problem is when we go from highbeams to low beams, the low beams will not come on for about five seconds. Your fog lights are your only light source during that five second window.

Yesterday driving home from Goshen in the rain and into the night the dash lights did not flicker once.
This confirms that Freightliner reprogramming the "light bar" is the fix.
