New to the diesel world. Manufacturer recommends Fleetguard brand of def. what brand does everyone use? I have a 2021 34b with a Cummins 360 turbo. Thanks

would the fact that cummins owns fleetguard have anything to do with that recommendation?

do you know what brand you are getting when you fill def at a diesel pump?

use whatever brand is available. def is def!

Agree Def is Def. But please check date codes you want the freshest Def possible, as heat, sunlight and age deteriorates Def.

Here is an article that may help you. Word of caution though the writer is using a brand name DEF but it is not necessary to use this brand for your needs. And there are some errors in the article such as ambient storage temps in the range. Also some miss spelling of words but you should be able to understand what he is getting at.

I myself don't have a need for DEF, but here in Alaska the Walmart brand seems to be the most popular by far. On any given day you can see numerous shopping carts full of the empty DEF containers. Walmart seems to be okay with the carts being full of containers. At least they're not scattered on the ground around the parking lot.

I choose to buy in bulk at the truck stop. I believe it’s cheaper that way and easier to dispense.

I also carry a 5 gal container (blue in color) filled with def in the basement for those situations where access to def isn’t easy.

Are you people DEF?

Buy the cheapest
Check the exp. date.
Get a battery powered pump to transfer.
Cuss under your breath at the guy that designed the DEF tank so you can’t fill it easily!!!
Don’t smell it!

Getting DEF in Tank

I am a new Berkshire owner and recently had to add DEF for first time. Previous owner had provided a container, 2.5 GAL I believe. My question is how do you get it in the tank? Anyone using a pump? With the bay door opening up it is almost impossible to empty the container. I have about half left. With the bad door opening up I can't even use a funnel. Why would they design that bad to go up?

Thankful for all ideas.

the new blue 2.5 gallon containers come with a hose that you screw onto the container. might be worthwhile to buy another container with hose at walmart (around $7.00) and use keep the hose for use on refilled containers. or perhaps a funnel with a long skinny spout.

I use Blue DEF mostly. It can be found at just about every store that sells auto / RV parts. On the road, I'll fill up with DEF right out of the pumps in the truck lanes. My DEF fill is located under the hood, on the passenger side up against the firewall. DEF fill ports typically have a blue cap.

You are correct on our coaches that’s a challenge. I had thought on the new ones there was a fuel type door on the driver side, but at any rate I Have the same experience. I bought a pump that runs off of two D size batteries at harbor freight. They come in two lengths and are around ten bucks. Takes a couple of minutes but works well to just slip the suction end in the bucket (the smaller one for the 2 1/2 or the longer for the 5 gallon) and the nozzle in the tank. You still have to bend under the door of course; but no lifting, spilling, or junk getting knocked in the opening.

My arms and back thank you

Thanks so much for this. On my way to Harbor Freight in 10 minutes.

I realize real solution is to purchase at Truck fill up and still wonder if this new diesel user isn't going to have a problem with that bay door opening up..can we get the hose under that? Will some stations have shorter hoses than others?

I'm learning more each day and looking forward to longer trips soon.

Here is a pic of my DEF tank area for my 2021.5 Berk 34B. 99.99% of the time I will fill it up at the Truck Stops. I have room to store an emergency DEF jug. I have room to use a flexible funnel.Click image for larger version

It appears you’re access door or bay door opens to side. As I said mine opens up and slants at about 6 degrees besides. My tank is similar but with doors open above it filling from a jug is very difficult and, although I have not tried it yet, I anticipate even filling using a station hose will not be easy
