DEF pumps at Flying j/Petro/Loves etc

From what I can see, most of the big service areas have DEF pumps but they are only at the truck islands. Does anyone know if any of the fuel stops have DEF pumps at the RV islands?

Tom I haven't seen DEF any place but big truck stops. I did take the advice given and bought a 5gal blue kerosene container and a hand pump at Walmart. I filled it at the pump today and will transfer it when we check in to the camp site in Tampa. I think I have ten bucks into it. Saved half that already. Thanks to who ever suggested it.

I have taken my truck right up to the truck islands and filled my DEF. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, especially if it's not very busy.

But no, I haven't seen any DEF pumps at the RV islands yet.

how much DEF are you using that this an issue? Can't you just buy a few jugs and keep in RV? My pickup holds just over 5 gallons, that's good for 4-5000 miles. To prove how little traveling I've done, what is an RV island?

I buy the 2 1/2 gal cartons at Wal Mart for $12. That is $4.80 per gallon. Last June we went out west. I carried two cartons with me and added one on the way back. Round trip was 5200 mile.

that's my point. If someone isn't comfortable using a big-rig pump island, just carry a few jugs. Not hard to find a Walmart or any parts store in your travels. Everyone carries it now. I work at a Case IH dealer. We have it in anywhere from 2.5 gallon jugs to 360 gallon totes.

Your money is just as good as thier money. Just the the right thing and pull up and clear the pump when done if you have to go inside. That way the next guy can start filling his up. I do it all the time.

It's not a matter of being able to use a big rig island. The hose won't reach our rigs tank unless you pull in backwards. I don't want to do that. Most of the time when I fuel it's busy. The jugs at Walmart require a extra trip and then carry it to the rig. PIA. I now fill a 5gal container pay half the price and move it three feet it store it in the basement. I have a cheapie hand pump and fill my tank at the campground. Great idea. Also on my MH there is no way to pour from the 2.5 gal container. Another PIA. This solves it. Not really a price thing.

You should have mentioned at first that the hose doesn't reach. That explains your issue. Sounds like you found a solution though.

Sorry Dave ,you are correct. Sometimes forget that this is a diverse forum when talking on the Berkshire page. We would get more helpful info if we included the compete issue instead of assuming only Berkshire owners are responding. Thanks for the input.

no need to be sorry. Just out of curiosity, how much DEF does your rig hold? The farm equipment I work on holds from 10-40 gallons. We use a 360 gallon tote with an electric pump that we move around shop with forklift.

I am guessing at around 7 gal. Not sure. I have put in 5 gal before but it wasn't empty.

Not sure if it has changed but the 2014 Berkshire's hold 13 gallons of def according to the brochure. I think that is about correct since mine was just above half and it only took 5 gallons.

I don't understand the need to pull into the fuel lanes backwards. The DEF tank is on the passenger side of my coach towards the rear. I have 2 fuel fills on my coach- one on each side toward the front. If I pull into the fuel lane where the fuel hose is on the passenger side, wouldn't the DEF hose be on that side also. I may have to pull the coach up so that it reaches but I'm not sure why I would need to pull into the fuel lane backwards.

For the record, it looks like at most Pilot/FlyingJ locations, DEF is $2.79 per gallon. You can go here and pick your state and see all fuel prices, and get the stations that have DEF.

No one should feel out of place for using a truck island at anytime.
The truck stop is there to provide a service if you need that service use it!

somebody asked what a rv island is. It's a fuel station that somebody with an rv can pull into and fuel up and or dump the tanks. Usually at truck stops. Sometimes pretty tight to maneuver.

I've never pulled the hose out all the way so just how long are they? I would assume it should reach all the way across the lane with a few extra feet. I've thrown plenty of fuel hoses under the truck to reach the other side and I would with DEF if I needed to as well. Rv manufacturers give you the perfect holding tank I wouldn't mess with carrying extra anything. It's just too readily available to worry about it.
Also, as a trucker, I wouldn't mind RV's at "my" pumps unless you decide to walk off to pay, go potty, get coffee or shop the isles after you're finished without pulling ahead.

Well I alway use the truckers lane with no issues. I tried to stretch the DEF hose and the one I tried wouldn't reach. Other locations may? The DEF is always on the wrong side. It's there for the truckers. You can fill from both sides but the DEF is so far as I have seen not on the passenger side. My idea worked ok but I need a better pump. The end would just curl up and the pump is a PIA. I will look for a better option.
