Dryer anchorage failure

We have a stock dryer above a washer against the back wall. It came with top and bottom bent restraining straps screwed to the rear wall and also to the front dryer surface. It appears to be reasonable, but turns out, isn't structurally sound.

Twice the restraining straps have torn loose from the rear wall during abrupt deceleration (no collisions). (Most recent was due to a couch falling out of a pickup in front of us.) The screws anchoring the straps just pull straight out of the plywood (as one might expect). A much more secure mounting would have been by using some form of through-wall anchorage - at least a toggle bolt; better with anchor through the wall with, say, a 1x4 behind to distribute the load - but never depending on straight pull-out on screws for anchorage.

Before I drill through the wall to improve this, does anyone have experience doing this? Should I be concerned with hitting something other than air behind the wall surface?

The locations would be about 10'-6" and 8' above the ground, and about 18" from the passenger side wall.

Thanks.

Thanks, Mangler.

I plan to use 1/4" Flip Toggles; 3 at each strap (as were the screws). They're pullout rated at 155# in 1/2" drywall. That should help keep that dryer from launching!
