Engine size and model to pull 5500 Dodge 4x4 truck
Hi Guys We are looking to buy a used Berkshire around a 2014 or 2015. We would like to get something like the 40' RB. Would we need to make sure that the hitch is rated 10000 lbs for towing? Can you tell me what Engine we would need to be looking at? I see they range from a 340 360 and 380. We want the model that has the Rear Bath. I don't know if those model years used the XL and XLT. Is there a way to find a Brochure for those years? Thanks for all Your Help.

We tow a 2017 Chevy Suburban LT with our Berkshire 390BH-60 with 10K hitch, Allison 3000 transmission and Cummins ISB 360. No issues. GVWR is around 5700lbs.

On my Suburban, I was referring to the curb weight of around 5700lbs. I wouldn’t recommend anything less than a 360hp to tow your truck. The 340’s usually have an Allison 2500 and 5k tow rating anyway which isn’t enough. You also have to look at your combined weight including all cargo and the coach.
The 2015 Berkshire came with a 340 with a 5k rating I believe. The Berkshire XL had the 360 and a 10k tow capacity. Around 2015 / 2016 they came out with a 380 option more torque it was the big block and I believe it's still had a 10K rating on the hitch.
