Engine Thermostat Temperature ?

I noticed that my engine's coolant temperature is only around 1/3 up on the gauge and the digital temperature is 192 degrees. Most vehicle's are arranged so that normal operating temp. is in the middle of the analog gauge and I know that engine's efficiency is best when running hot.

I also have found that in cold weather, the heater temp. is not too great.

I called Cummins and they gave me a thermostat part number of 4929644, with a modulating range of 186 to 207 and max. of 225.

I couldn't get to a good tech. person and I am not sure if my 192 degrees is correct. This not necessarily a problem, but for efficiency, every extra 1 MPG is a blessing.

Has anyone explored this subject?

The 192 degree reading should be spot on. The gauge running at 1/3 is not abnormal for an analog gauge reading. We tend to see 1/3 to 1/2 gauge readings commonly depending on manufacturer as normal.

Hi Ashley
Since my post, I talked to another Cummins rep. and Cummins service shop. You sound like you have a tech background.
Thx again,
Hank

Forgot to mention that they all said 192 degrees is spot-on, as you stated.

Phil, my Tranny temp. is all over the place, as it should be. It does not have a thermostat, like the engine. I recently saw the tranny temp at 137 and remember climbing mountains in the summer and seeing it go up. The thermostat for the engine is a regulator and purposely keeps the temp. within a range, as you probably know.
