Generator fuel filter
Has anyone serviced the fuel filter on their generator? I was going to change mine yesterday but the filter that was supposed to fit was the oblong one and I could only see what looked like an inline in the compartment where it was supposed to be located. I decided to leave it alone since I only have 27 hours on the genny (from once a month exercise) I did change the coolant also, which wasn't a bad job.

Rich, I believe the manual says to change the fuel filter at 500 hours.. A little early for you. Craig

Thanks Craig. I also figured it was a little early, too, but would have changed it if I had the right one.

Craig are you saying there are two filters for the generator? My Tiffan MH had two one in the generator and another small metal can inline before the generator. It was the best kept secret even Tiffin employees didn't know it existed. I will admit the hidden one was easier to change but the first time it plugged up was a real scavenger hunt.

Wayne, I am only aware of the one, which I have changed. All of the manuals and everything I researched indicates only one filter. Cummings mistakenly sold me an older model fuel filter a while back (a rectangle looking thing). At the time, I could never figure out where the fuel filter was, because nothing looked like the one they sold me. Not until I needed to actually change the filter (got plugged up), did I discover that I had the wrong filter (needed the can looking one that is in-line). Recently when I was at the FMCA Rally in Madison, I showed the older filter to the Cummings Parts Truck guys, and they told me to give it to Rich😂, as it was the old one (actually gave it to Ernest - 2008 model). Does anyone have the correct oil filter part number for the HDKAK ?
They keep sending me the wrong oil filter.

Thanks. I researched and compiled the info in a word document so I don't have to go looking every year when I need to do maintenance. I got some of the info here (thanks FR forum!) and the rest I found on the internet.
Keep in mind, the generator comes with a smaller oil filter. Its only for the 50hr break in period. When you do the first oil change the oil filter you use will be larger, but its also good for the next 150hrs.

Thanks to all !!!
Great info. I'll store it somewhere so I don't lose it.
I can't say how much I love this forum, enough.

Baddmann, you are way more sophisticated than I am. I just place a 2 inch piece of masking tape on the top of the generator with the date, oil type and amt., filter # and any other service that I performed at that time. I wonder if that kind of "record" will hold up at warranty time? (although I do save receipts)

Ensure you look at your spec code on your generator. I have the QD8000 but mine takes a different fuel filter than mentioned above. I found this out this past weekend when I was in the infield of Charlotte and my generator was surging with a heavy load and then would stall. Went to the RV store and got the fuel filter mentioned above but when I went to replace it mine looked like the picture I posted below. Needless to say, there are different part numbers even though we have the same generators. Luckily they had mine also and I picked it up and replaced the filter with ease.

Hey Jason, that is the filter that I have, also. What is the part# and is it a simple squeeze clamp removal, replace, prime and go? Also, how many hours did you have on your genny when you had the problem? I only have about 27 on mine and have always used fuel stabilizer when storing and also try to run it for an hour every 30 days or so.

Rich,
Sorry I did not keep the box with the part number. The RV dealership I got it from said there is only two different ones for that generator. The one earlier mentioned and the one we have. Any RV place or cumins dealer should know it if you give them your serial number.
I had about 700 on mine and the filter was not the issue so I would definitely not worry at 27.
My issue ended up being that I just had warranty work on the generator and when they were done, they never clamped the electrical and fuel lines back up so they were getting kinked when I closed the generator. I figured this out after I changed the filter. So 700 hours and technically it would have still been fine.
Easy change, you need to cut the old clamps off or cut the hose and then use normal clamps when reinstalling new filter. Both ends of the hose is plenty long enough if you cut them at the clamp. That is what I did and the dealership service guy recommended.
They gave me the NAPA brand of fuel filter.

I have the can shaped fuel filter also.
If anyone discovers the correct part number for it, please post it here.
Thanks,
Ken
