Girard GSWH-1M - replacement???

I spent the last 3 months trying to get desired temp water flow from my shower, and never did. Is there a fairly economical replacement for this water heater?


My 2004 Itasca Meridian had a great water heater in it. I liked it! I hate my 2014 water heater.


I talked to Trauma in Quartzsite and their heater alone was over $1,000, not counting labor. Hopefully someone has a economical solution for me.

We replaced our Atwood on demand with the Girard Gen 3 on demand. No regrets. Constant hot water even when adjusting hot/cold mix and at low water pressure.Total cost around $540 with door.

Thanks Jim, this is certainly better than the Trauma price I was quoted. Sounds like Gen 3 has made some needed improvements over Gen 1.

You’re welcome. Before our trip to Florida I called Truma for an installed quote.....$1450. Wife was unhappy with Atwood but not that unhappy. Very happy with Gerard 3. Happy wife makes...........

We had the first Generation Garard on demand heater in our Birckshire it never worked properly. After three failures I talked to Garard and they sent the Generation 3 and a new door. The Gen 3 works great has a programmable meter you can mount in the coach and set the temperature at a comfortable setting.

I installed myself. You can go on You Tube and watch an install then decide if you can do it. I painted the door myself. Got spray paint and clear coat at Lowe’s. Close enough match for me.

The gen 3 is a big step forward from the earlier units and much better than 95% of the tank type heaters on the market.

(Why 95%?...any tankless unit other than the Truma cannot supply repetitive amounts of hot water. Think about washing your hands, or better yet, doing the dishes. You turn on the hot water, wait 10 seconds, get hot water, do the wash or rinse and then turn it off. 5 seconds later, you turn on the hot water, wait 10 seconds and then hot water appears and you wash or rinse. You must wait that 8-15 seconds every time you turn on the hot water for the hot water to show up. This does not happen with a tank-style heater. But-for taking a shower, you wait 10 seconds and then have hot water as long as your water and propane last. Just don't turn it off.
Some larger, 10 or 12 gallon tank style heaters with quick recovery can do a great job of supplying repetive amounts of hot water and provide a pretty lengthy shower (just not unlimited however) These larger water heaters are not so common, so that is why I said 95%. The Truma is truly the best of both worlds, but as you found out, can be costly to install. I like our gen 3 Girard very much but since it was close to $1000 to install with labor, I might have chosen the Truma if I had to do it over again. Using a tankless system when the outside temp and water temp is down near freezing can be a challange, but that is another story...)

I installed a Truma- it was expensive but so worth it! I has to driveway camp while remodeling my house- Over 6 weeks of perfect showers- My only complaint would be price but I would never own any other again

I had a friend help me. He actually walked me through the steps so no way I could mess it up.

I installed the Truma myself. An easy way to make the water connections is to use shark bite fittings. You can also buy a pex crimper at home depot but the shark bite fittings allow you to take apart with cutting any pipes.



They all install similar- Its not very hard.

Has anyone used an Atwood RV water heater replacement tank? I am pretty sure my water heater is cracked and I am thinking of going this route since its a lot cheaper. I have a 25 ft. Coachmen Prism with an Atwood 6 gallon tank.

How did you obtain a Truma to install yourself? Truma will not sell unless through an approved installer......
