Help with Driving 95north.
We have a trip planed to visit southern New Jersey- cape may area. Coming from SC. I realize the i95 through Baltimore(tunnel) is off limits because of propane. Is a good alt route to go chesapeake bay bridge then north thru Deleware over the 295 bridge I think that's the Delaware memorial bridge. Any advice would be appreciated.

Bring pockets full of coins, a lot of toll roads. Went across from Ohio and headed north same area last summer. Spend more than $200 in tolls alone.

Wow any way around some of the tolls? If you stayed in cape may area do you recommend a campground?

We stayed at Plymouth and drove around from there; camp ground was very nice, KOA. Boston was great and close by. Plenty to see in that town. Cape is probably an hour south from Plymouth.

If you go that route it will be slow. I travel that route down from NY to Willmington NC every year (without the camper). It is slow, and you will be traveling through small towns, but the roads are nice. Also if you are going through Deleware you can take the Cape May Ferry. A little $$, but will save you on actual driving time.
The other way, which I was told is nice, but have not done it, is to use 301 from Baltimore to Richhmond. Again slower but avoids the DC Area.
That is the way I plan on going down to Williamsbug, VA this year.
As far as tolls get an EZ-pass, makes life a lot easier...

You can cross the key bridge and stay on your 95n path.

I just drove 301 from Bowling Green VA to New Jersey last December trying to avoid traffic. Didn't realize all the traffic lights on this road. Sure did change from the 80's when I drove it all the time.
If taking RT. 95, use the Key Bridge around Baltimore and bring lots of money. Haven't taken my camper through the tolls yet but I know I get hammered with the truck.
Have you picked a campground yet? I, too, was looking at some sites in that area. I talked to the campgrounds at the Atlantic City RV show. Some of them had tight spots.
I might look at Holly Shores Camping Resort. I got their flyer in the mail and it looks nice. Www.hollyshores.com. I'm not affiliated with them and have never been there. Just trying to help out.

Honestly I prefer staying with I-95. Around Baltimore, you just have to take I-695 around the tunnels and you're fine. I prefer the bottom side of the beltway. But, as mentioned - do plan on tolls. By car, it's a good $20. I only use EZ-pass with the truck so I really don't know what they got me for. A lot, I bet.

Thank you everyone for your input. I like to have options. The tolls won't be fun. Has anyone stayed in the cape may, nj area with any insight in campgrounds?

When i travel 95 to nj i use 301. There is traffic and lights but it's probably almost as fast as 95. You save tolls and the hassle of traffic from DC to Del. Take 95 to exit 104 Va to 301. Follow 301 to 896 in De to US 1 N back to 95 to 295 over De memorial bridge to rt 40 E to rt 55.

Thanks for that info. I will look at that. It looks like once past Richmond you miss all the really bad traffic spots. Only tolls should be the chessapeak bridge and del memorial bridge. Is that right?

I stayed at seashore campsites twice. Very nice. A small farmers market just opened at the entrance for fruits, veggies, flowers. I think you have to pay for showers. Not too far from the ferry.

My only issue with this route is that the Harry P. Nice bridge from VA to MD on 301 is neither hairy or nice. It's not awful, but its definitely unpleasant.
The maps don't do it justice:

Depending where you are in SC, you might consider taking I-81 up through Shenandoah Valley, crossing over through Harrisburg, York, etc, and eastward to the Jersey shore., You'll miss a bunch of tolls, and a much more relaxing drive. Be sure to stop in New Market Va at Southern Kitchen for their Peanut Soup - indescribably delicious.

I live in the cape may area. The main campgrounds are Holly Shores, Beachcomber, Seashore, Cape Island, and Lake Laurie. The first 3 will be the best for amenities. They are all within a few miles of each other. As far as driving, while the Cape May- LEWES Ferry is pricey, but you can relax for 1 1/2 hour ferry ride and when u get off, you are within a 5-10 minute drive to all the campgrounds I listed.
