How do I Block The Shower Dome Heat ?

This summer, I had a pillow tied with cord to the rim screws to block the tremendous heat that comes in through the shower dome.

I know that I can make the insulation, like maybe using expandable foam to form fit the insulation. But my big question is does anyone have a good idea for how to hold it up there and able to quickly remove it when desired.

You can paint the outside top of it white. That will help some. Some higher dollar coaches come with a "trap" door that can open and close for it also. I'm sure one of those could be retrofitted to a Berk.

Hank, a lot of heat comes through that "sky light". I recently measured mine with a temperature "gun". 115 degrees - 89 outside temp. I now just close the bathroom door. It has helped a lot. Craig

Post #14 I think. Ours is coated on the outside with a product from Proguard, batten insulation on the inside, then bubble insulation. Of course this skylight has the interior decor replacing the inner dome, but the one above the shower underwent the same treatment, but still has the inner dome, which is also painted from the inside. No light, no heat.

Big John: You do not have a Berkshire. The cavity for the shower's inside dome has very sloping sides. You cannot get anything to stay within the cavity with the exception of a sky hook. Hank

I realize I don't have a Berkshire, but I have owned 2 motorhomes and a scad of other RVs with different dome designs. Pull the inner dome. Use your imagination. I've done this to all of our rigs, sloped or not. On our shower dome, pulled the inner dome, filled the cavity between the 2 with batten, painted the inside of the inner dome, secured bubble insulation to the inside of the inner dome, reinstalled. Looks the same, minus the light and heat. I've done a bunch of them, on ours and other's rigs. Hadn't seen one I couldn't make work.

we painted ours white (on the outside) using rubber spray paint we picked up at Lowes. put several coats on and has helped with the heat and still lets in some light. figured that using the rubber paint could pull off if didn't like it

I loosened 4 of the screws around the skylight trim just enough to string some elastic cording around the screws. I tightened the screws back. That made a "holder" for the cover I fashioned out of foam core and reflective $ store windshield cover. I can slide this cover off and on easily. It makes a world of difference in the amount of heat that comes in the skylight. I still have the option of removing it when I am parked in the shade or in the wintertime.

Not a Berk, but similar here... I removed the 6 screws on the long sides and put them back with a nylon coax clamp under them, then put an entry door reflective shade over the opening (it is the same size) and used 3 mini-bungees to hold it in place (the glue on the supplied velcro won't hold).

Not pretty... but fast up and fast down with velcro (2 standard vent covers velcro'd together. Very functional and takes hardly any space to store.

Did the same as above in ours, not a berk, used industrial velcro that is seeming to hold. I did not want to loose the whole skylights (well the DW did not). 132 in the skylight, 90 in the bathroom without the air on.

I bought the aluminum bubble wrap insulation roll at lowes and cut to fit. Added the double side Velcro tape and holds throughout summer and take it off in winter. Tape removes fine

Use the insulating bubble foam cut larger than the opening, it is available in the home stores and use velcro strips to hold it in place.

Just to add another thought to this discussion; By painting the outside of the dome, it will probably have a much longer life. Strong UV will dry out the plastic used, and it will eventually crack. I had an 07 Durango, that lived most of its life inside a barn. But the dome eventually began to crack. The cracking might be due to several influences, such as vibration and flexing during travel, or it might have been installed in a flexed mode that contributed to the eventual cracking. But the cracks did not start or end at a screw hole. Both cracks were out in the "dome" area.

I think painting it white is a great idea. I may go ahead and paint the dome in my Silverback.

Exactly why I used the proguard product. Did Liquid Roof on one, and another one of their products on another. Makes it more like the roof itself. Better than paint in my opinion, and a LOT thicker.
