License plate(s)

I spent about an hour at the local courthouse registering my new Berkshire. I was somewhat surprised ( I really can't say why) when the clerk gave me passenger car plates. Seemed like I was thinking they would give me truck plates but what do I know. It also appears that there is no front license plate holder. Anyplace other than Washington insist that you mount the front plate and if so how did you do it.

Front license plates are required here in Texas. Our coach doesn't have a place to mount front plates either and I can not see myself drilling holes to mount one. I just keep the front plate in the coach, cross my fingers and hope for the best. At best I think all I would ever do is lay it up on the front dash.

A friend here in New York has a Berkshire also and he attached his front plate to the "grill" with back zip ties. No holes and looks real nice.

Dan,
I picked up small suction cups, the ones you find with metal hooks on them. I removed the metal hook and forced the small end where the hook was into the hole on the license plate. I put it low in the windshield with the suction cups holding the plate. Works well.
This is the suction cup I am speaking about. Bought them in a craft shop and 4 cost about a dollar.

Same here for this Texan.
Quite a while back I started to worry about this so I started looking at other cars. Seems that most newer cars did not even have brackets for the front plate and at least half did not have a front plate. So I stopped worrying about it.

My coach in New York has passenger plates also. The coach is not a truck and is not (normally) used for commercial purposes so they issue passenger plates for these vehicles.

My license plate have "private bus" on it. Must be a Louisiana thing.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I should have used the search function. I particularly liked Area 51's approach but I'm not quite ready to pull out the DeWalt yet.

hard to drill 'em the first week. Just punched two 1/4" holes in mine and got it legal for my road test...just a simple bracket behind the plate and a soft trim ring. Ultimately, I'll finally spot a better bracket and mount it up with the same holes. For now i'm legal and done. Road Trip countdown clock is 93 hours.

The auto plates in Washington are because it is a fixed load. Our plates have been in the windshield for 10 years.

Can't speak to the 2 plate requirement, but here in SC, they issue a normal plate. I used to see an "RV" tag and thought that was what I would get but the dealer said that is not a requirement so I just transferred mine from a car I sold.

Our front plate isin the file box with all the manuals, if ever stopped and questioned about it would put in the front windshild if asked. 4 years, never stopped.

With truck plates your insurance and registration would likely cost several times more than what you're paying for personal plates plus you would probably be subject to commercial inspections, go over truck scales, carry a log book and a get a CDL.

Texas motor vehicle section states

HB 625 clarifies that the penalty for operating a vehicle on a public highway without displaying the two license plates assigned to the vehicle is a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine not to exceed $200.

i have found that most local police kinda ignore this but state troopers will stop you for it uh don't ask how i know this

Depending on what kind of day the state trooper here in Texas is having, you can be issued a ticket if you don't have a front plate mounted.... And they won't take "a lot of others don't have one" as a logical reason....

Just do what I did - bite the bullet and drill two small holes in the front fiberglass and screw the sucker down and move on down the road.... A lot better than a $250 ticket....

Considering the affection the DPS seems to have for your little stretch of the highway, you could get pulled over every day.

I'm legal. Plate is on, passed my road test today! Went joyriding on I20 to celebrate.

Road Trip begins in 84 hours. Gonna drive through No3putt's town about 4pm on Wednesday, I expect him on an overpass to get a picture for "I saw a Berkshire."
