Looks like I am going to get a Berkshire 38A...
Anyone that has this model with the bath and half and 340 HP ? Is their enough horsepower and are you happy with your coach? We are looking at a 2016.....asking price is 181,000...thanks in advance for any responses and help ...

Very happy 2011 390 RB-40 owner. The 340 Cumins is fine you'll slow down in the mountains but it is no problem. The 340 Cumins has 5,000 lbs tow limit due to the Allison 2500 transmission. The 360 Cumins has an Allison 3000 transmission and tow capacity is 10,000. I don't know if they changed since mine was built or they are still the same transmission.

Yes, the hitch is rated at 5,000 lb, but that does not necessarily mean that you can tow a 5,000 lb toad. The Allison 2500MH tranny limits the overall weight to 33,000 lb. Without going into the many previous post about weight, I would suggest that your selling dealer weigh the RV for you at a CAT scale. You will then know how much you can carry. I would never again do such a large investment again, without doing that step IMO!

As long as you can stay below the weight limit on the 340 with the Allison 2500 it's fine. If you have concerns get the 360 with the Allison 3000. I'm happy with the 340 and love my fuel milage. I don't know if the fuel milage is affected by the 360 or not. Cost was also a factor.

390rb 2013 340/2500 Allison
We have a 2013 390RB with the 340 with the Allison 2500. We live in Wa state and travel to Arizona for the fall/winter returning in Late May early June.
The RB had a 5000 lb hitch on it and I told them it was not enough to tow my 2500 Dodge. They told me they would put a 10000 lb hitch on it and would be fine. I questioned this and asked if it would void warranties...they said no.
Well not believing them we sold the truck and purchased a new Jeep Rubicon 4 door. It tows just fine. We do, and you will too go up a hill slower but...it all works out. We get great fuel economy and it is nice having the extra bath.

I believe the hitch is the same the weak point is the transmission for sure.

accumack is correct. They put the same hitch on Berkshires with either the 340 or 360 hp engines. The difference, as he stated, is the transmission.

Some where you received bad info,the 38A only come with 340HP.If you want 360 you have to go XL or XLT models.The good news is that the 38A is a terrific coach with plenty of room,great to drive and the 340hp gives great fuel economy.

That's exactly what I have. Pulled a 4 dr Jeep Wrangler from FL through CO on I-70, to Portland, OR, down the coast highway to San Francisco and back to FL. Am now in the Keys. No problems. I do drive conservatively, 55-60 mph. Going up I-70 to the Eisenhower Tunnel got down to about 38 mph. Ave fuel economy on the flats between 11-12 mpg. About 10 in the mountains. We have been full timing it since late June and are loving it.

Have a 2009 with the 340. Been from Alaska to Florida Keys and many places between. Live in Colorado and been up and down the mountians not a problem and tow a small car all the time. Gone up Bertha pass over 12,000 feet at 45. So unless your really in a hurry the engine is fine.
