Porch Light

Just replaced my porch light on my Berkshire with a new LED one.... Old one would get so hot it'd melt the cover and it would fall off.

Two observations- first, I thought I'd never get the old factory installed one off. Good grief they had that thing on there to stay. I removed the four screws and thought it would just pop right off.... WRONG!!!! I don't know what kind of adhesive they used but it took a razor blade and a pair of pliers to pull the dang thing off... Wish I had a tube of that stuff...

Secondly - man that new LED light is SUPER BRIGHT!!!! It's amazing the difference it makes. And it's streamlined design looks great....

Could you share the fixture you installed? Id love to replace mine and I’m sure it’s similar if not exactly the same.

I installed a "Starlights SL-1000 Smart Light 1000 12-volt Exterior Motion Light, Black" that I purchased from Amazon for under $60 and have been very happy with it. It was a direct replacement for the one that was on my 2014 Berk and has a motion / light sensor so I can leave it on all the time. It also has a voltage monitor on it and will blink red when your voltage gets low.

When at Amish Family Services last August, Orvan replaced ours with LED. He said he had a lot of customers coming in with a fire in the area of porch light, that many were using bulbs that were way too hot. I had no idea, but I told him to switch it out.

My also melted, so i put in led bulb and replaced with thw same kind but with clear lens. Cost me about $6 off of eBay shipped plus a couple bucks for the bulb. It is also a lot brighhter.

I took my heat gun to take off the old one and once heated it came off really easy.

My porch light was yellow, but too dim for my taste. I put in a backup light bulb for more light and it melted the fixture.

I bought an LED bulb and noticed that it didn't get too hot. Then, I bought a replacement light from my local RV supplier the is white and not yellow. It also has a switch on the bottom, so that I can turn it off if there are a lot of moths. The porch light is on the same switch as the awning light.

The original light was glued in with a lot of clear Silicone. I think I installed the replacement with Sikaflex, which is now my go-to sealant in water sensitive areas. It looks a lot more professional than Dicor and is really durable, yet flexible. And, it is easy to get in the building supplies department of home builders, since it is used for sealing non-porous materials to porous materials like mortar.

A motion sensor light would have been a good choice.

I upgraded my light with that motion sensor I like it because it will come on if somebody walks into the field by the door. Plus I can see to unlock the door.
