Residential Ice maker freezing up
Reading the topic heading might make you say what the heck but it happened. First and maybe only thing that comes to mind is how can an ice maker freeze up?
During our first outing of the year last week to Bristol the 6 month filter reminder light came on reminding me to order a new filter the ice maker was producing ice fine so no problem then one morning when I woke up I stepped in water walking by the fridge. I figured one of the dogs had an accident but then realized unless there was a race horse loose in the RV no way they could produce that much water. Checking I found a leak spraying water from the plastic water line to the fridge at the valve under the sink. Not having parts with me I shut the valve stopping the leak and ice production.
Getting home I fixed the leak and turned the valve back on when I went to check later for additional leaks there was nothing in the bin but I could feel ice in the mold. Days later still no production so now I'm thinking does the reminder light have something that could stop production? No problem with drinking water dispenser so water is getting through filter but to isolate problem I removed filter and installed bypass, bleed water to remove air multiple times still no ice.
Now I'm thinking my ice maker one month out of warranty has died so I removed ice maker which still has ice in mold brought it into house overnight thawing ice and dumping water from mold. First thing this morning I reinstalled maker and checked with my local Whirlpool dealer for replacement which he tells me not in stock but retails for$240 ouch @&$# one month out of warranty. So fast forwarding 2hours I go out to check and to my surprise there are cubes in bin. So what the heck how can an ice maker freeze up. Time will tell if problem reappears but purchase of replacement is on hold and monitoring is underway.
