RV Covers

I am considering the purchase of an RV cover for our new 390BH but am wondering about the weight of the cover and how difficult it will be to raise it to the roof and deploy. Any advise or comments? Thanks!

Our friends use one on their 30' motorhome (which is our old rig and is parked next to my garage). He doesn't seem to have much trouble putting it on. Does keep the rig nice and clean over the winter though. If I stored an RV outside I would definately have one.

Have had a cover which I purchased from Camping World for 2 winters. If you are covering by yourself, it could be a hassle. My son usually comes over to help me. We usually put the whole cover in a pile at the rear of the rig and pull it over towards the front(we are on ladders-one on each side). I like it covered in the winter to protect the seams on the roof and keep the snow off. Not sure if in NC you need to worry about the snow but you do get the ice which could cause problems.

When they come from the factory, they are rolled up nice and neat in the little box. Start on the roof, roll it front to back, then drape it over the sides. The smart guy will roll it back up in a similar fashion for storage, and remember which end goes toward the front for next year.

When I remove mine I roll it up I lay it out on the ground and roll it up from front to rear. I then store it in a big plastic garbage can that has wheels. When ready to cover in fall, I roll it to the rear and dump it out of the garbage can and knowing that the front part of the cover is on top, start pulling it over the motor home.

It was a windy day the first time I was removing my cover and it almost took me with it.

What is an approximate weight of a cover? I am trying to decide what to cover my 28'bh with. Can two 70 yo women manage it?

To pile onto pondlady's question - got any idea what type cover to get? I know that they come in various grades? We don't get much snow in the Raleigh area but do get rain and sun.

The sun is brutal here in South Louisiana. Snow, not so much. I would rather buy a cover than have to build one to park under if it's doable. I worry that we could not handle it ourselves, tho.

I was almost ready to "pull the trigger" on a cover for my 5th wheel.
I am so glad I did not.

I asked some friends who were RVers about the pros and cons and the cons spooked me.

The pros are pretty well covered here, but the cons they mentioned were:

Winds:
Accelerated wear of roof edges due to rubbing.
Damage to antennas due to flapping

Access:
Hard to check for damage throughout the winter
Hard to air out camper after high humidity days
Hard to impossible to open camper slides to periodically check for critters and damage

Rain:
While it is supposed to keep the rain off the rig, water has a way of getting in (don't ask me how - I think it's voodoo magic)

I bought an AC cover to keep trash out of the fins and that's it.
I need to wash the roof once a year anyway so I just do it in the Spring with the "Spring Cleaning."
I also run out the slides and awning after each rain once the sun comes out to dry everything.
I air out the camper every couple of weeks and check for critters and damage.

Oh, and why I am glad?
I found water on the floor under the AC after a really hard rain due to a mis-installed gasket from the factory and would never have found it until maybe months later while camping in a heavy rain if it had been covered.

We are from PA and your issue is more SUN than rain.

As to winds, I think you are worse off than us.

Who? Us? Winds? :lol: We do get winds. Katrina painted a target on our house and hit the bullseye. Took the house somewhere and we will never know where. Yes, we get winds. Next time we get winds, we will get oil too.

I have decided to not get a cover, but go ahead a pour a concrete pad and build a cover over it.

But your winds are so wonderful for gliding.

After 33 years of flying, I find I am afraid to fly.

Gliding was wonderful just outside of State College, but I was young and dumb then.
I would be afraid now, I think. You are brave to fly. Everyone knows that airplanes are too heavy to leave the ground. <G>

I think helicopters become airborne strictly on faith.
There is no logical reason for them to fly.

I flew in one once as a volunteer after Hurricane Camille in 1969. It had no doors. That was the first and last time. Anyone can see those things can't fly. Especially without doors.
