States Visited Map - Criteria?

OK - I see on another thread a wonderful discussion about counting and displaying the US Map with States visited. I would like to know the criteria you all use before counting a State - visited??? Drove through? Stopped and looked around?? Stayed at least one night???

We've driven through many States but only dropped anchor in a few...

Superchief has all 50 States, and in my mind, that is an amazing accomplishment. I started my map this morning and I've got years of catching up to do!

i count states i have driven thru or landed (hi & alaska) and countries japan and philipines as places ive been even tho only a few hours

To me there is no criteria, If a person drives or stays in a state with there RV they should put it down.

Personally I went with wherever I set up camp, one night or a week. That's just me, you can go with what feels good to you.

Used to do only places camped but now going to do the places we visit as well while with the rv, just not necessarily camping at.

For me I need to camp there before it counts as a visit.

You could put a small star on the ones you visit more than once.

Thanks all! Maybe the word criteria was a poor choice. I know ultimately, it's whatever I choose to do. I'm just very interested in what others use as their benchmark.

I actually found one map-creator that colors the States based on "passed-thru" to "might as well live there"...

Maybe I should clarify my post. Most states I have stayed in been across the country 4 x's. I have stopped in every state to visit or camp that's listed. There is something to see in every state. I sailed 1/2 way around the world 15,000 blue water miles under my keal. We were gone for 5 years visited 17 Country's, that is dropping anchor. That is different because you have to get your passport stamped in and out. I count my map as states that I have visited or camped in. But an RV was always in tow.....Thing to us is just have fun and see what each state has to offer.....

I agree with "donanddona", it's your map, do it your way. As far as I know there are no map police! The goal is to see and travel around this great country, while you are able!! Craig

This really a timely topic. CNN just did a piece the other day on it. Here is some of what was written:

Fitting in all 50 states is an impressive achievement. In fact, anyone who knocks 35 off the list is eligible for membership in the exclusive All Fifty Club, an organization that recognizes individuals who make it to every state with a plaque or certificate to commemorate their accomplishment.

To "visit" a state, a person has to step outside the airport and breathe the air, according to the organization's website. Airport layovers mean nothing.

Those who are truly passionate about making it to all 50 states often have their own criteria for crossing them off the list, from a hard-core requirement of staying in a state for more than a month to simply hopping out of the car to snap a picture at the border.

I saw that CNN article and thought is was very timely since this thread had just started up.
I looked at the club website and even they say that the criteria is up to each individual to determine.

I figured the title of the maps alone kinda inferred it was visited states, not necessarily camped in states. That's also what the sites say,

I believe it is each to his own. You could determine if you wanted it to be visited states, camped in states, states you used the restroom in, states you bought fuel in, states you ate a banana split in, states you logged into Forest River Forums from, etc etc.

For me, I have been in, or driven through all 50 states. But as an over the road trucker, that is not unusual. I have "trucked" in 49 0f them. We also have an Aruba sticker, since we go there each year. My wife and I decided we would only place, (on the rig), the states we have gone back and camped in.

Is one of the links above a way to add that map to these forums in a signature line?

Personally I am counting only the states that "we" visited ( with the DW ) My parents took driving trips when I was very young & personally before I was in high school I visited every state in the US west of the Mississippi (except Alaska & Hawaii) but I am not counting them for "our map" as I was very young & single.

I've probably driven in or stayed overnight in 45 or so of the 50, including Alaska and Hawaii, but for the purposes of the map of states visited, we use the criteria of having STAYED AT LEAST ONE NIGHT IN OUR RV IN A STATE in order to count as having "visited" it. At this point, we're over 50%, but using our criteria, probably won't ever get to count Hawaii.

We got our Sunseeker in September 2010. I retired on April Fool's Day, 2011.

We have stayed overnight in it in 43 states and we have driven through 3 more. We'll never RV in Hawaii, and may not in Alaska, so the most we are likely to do is the lower 48.

I have set foot in 49 states so far, but we are flying to Alaska in June so I will have visited the 50 states that I know of.

Me too, although I DID miss Vermont in the truck.

For me, as a full time RV'er I don't even care if my rig has been in any state east of Colorado. That's not meant as an insult to easterners. Just that nothing "back east" interests me.

I primarily travel only to always be in "chamber of commerce" weather. When it gets to cold (or hot) somewhere, that's when I move on.... always chasing the best climate.

And I agree; it's your map, do it your way.
