Tail Pipe

Not sure if this caused by the heat resistant sock, or if they only last 6 years

Mine lasted 9 years - but I think it was the sock holding moisture. I had a hard time finding one this past summer- good luck in your search.

I got a bit of a run around from the local frieghtliner shops who didn’t have the part and wouldn’t give me the part number, so I called Gaffney who provided the part number to me after a little whining by me.

My local dealer did not have it but did a nation wide search for me, gave the me the part number and dealer name. Had them ship it.

Mine lasted 6yrs. A local repair shop replaced it for me. If I remember right, it was less than $150.

Good luck.

You got a good deal. The going rate for the part is $189 now.

Tail Pipe

I replace the rusted out pipe with this stainless for about $90. Had to cut a small section off but it worked out great. The bends matched what was on the motorhome really well.

That does look real close. About 2 inches longer but like you pointed out it can be trimmed down real easy. I am a bit concerned about the diameter of the pipes at the ends. Since they are flared out, do you remember it this was designed for a 4" OD pipe to mate up by fitting into the flare which I assume is 4" ID? The original part (I upload the picture is not flared). My muffler and tail pipe extension (chrome piece) at 4" ID. Sorry for the long description, but did you just cut off the flare on both ends? I definitely like the cost savings of your solution.

As best I can recall I only cut about 2” off. I have a non-stock stainless tailpipe tip (I bent the original). I believe it was the end that mates to that tip that I cut.

At a reasonable hour I will go out and take some pics and post. And by the way I purchased a couple of those Federal mogul heat socks on EBay to cover it. I felt like if Freightliner thought it was needed I would replace them.

Tail Pipe

I believe the tail pipe fits into the SCR device and my exhaust tip fits over the pipe. So in my case I think I cut off whichever end made it closest to the original installation position.

Appreciate the pics. I’m on the road right now riding dirty with no tail pipe. I need to measure pipe at the SCR. I know my diffuser is 4” ID, and I assumed the SCR was the same. Again I appreciate your insight.

When I replaced mine- with a factory Freightliner pipe, I had trouble with the diameter of the new pipe. It was very loose fitting. I had to add a shim to make it fit tight.

I had a hard time getting the chrome extender off. Looked like it was stuck on some rust chips. I bet it was the remnants of shims. Good info.

Tail Pipe

Anyone know what the original pipe material was. The one I installed is 409 stainless. Just wondering if there’s another replacement in my future.

Being close to the ocean in VA Beach does not help.

I haven't really had any issues with my cars down here. Didn't have any rust problems with the RV except on that piece of pipe and as you can see from the pic, it was significant. I ordered the pipe (unspecified material) but the original FL part. I am not going to replace the heat resistant sock so I can keep an eye on it.

Update. The FL tailpipes are on backorder. 58 - 80 days wait. So I put the part Edgewant suggested on order for a temporary (or maybe permanent) repair. There will be a minor mod that Edgewant pointed out, but will post how this works out.

I installed the Dodge RAM tail pipe onto the Berk today. The cost of the pipe was $90 vice $250 from FL, but price was not the reason for installing the Dodge part. There is a backlog of the FL parts of about 2-3 months currently and no tailpipe = no inspection. You can see by the pics that the offset is dead on, but the Dodge pipe is 2 inches longer and is flared to fit over a 4” pipe. The FP part is designed to feed into the flare on the SCR on one end and into the diffuser (pretty exhaust pipe) on the other end. The flares are about 3 inches, so cutting both off leaves the pipe to short. I cut off the end of the pipe that goes into the SCR and then borrowed a piece from the old exhaust to slide into the flare of the Dodge pipe to allow the diffuser to be clamped onto the Dodge pipe. I was going to put a tack weld on for good measure, but everything is pretty solid.

Dodge part identified by Edgewant: https://ktinstockautoparts.com/i-314...inless-34.html

FL Part: FREIGHTLINER 04-29291-000
