Night 1 - Vernon, TX.... 419 miles later....

What a day... Started off with a bang when I went out to the coach early this AM and realized that when I hooked up my Mini Cooper late yesterday, I forgot to use the drop hitch soooo. Had to totally un-hook Mini, pull out tow-bar receiver, plug in drop hitch, plug in tow-bar receiver and re-hook up Mini....

Finally got on the road about 9:20.... While driving thru Dallas/FW, started to get hot in coach (using dash AC) so decided to kick on generator and roof AC.... No go - batteries too weak to fire it up..... Sooo - drove a couple of hours to Decatur where I found new batteries at O'Reilly Auto Parts ($125.00 X 4) but they did have one of their guys install them.... Fired up generator and away we went to the CG in Vernon....

Got to CG, plugged in and my Magnum display is showing a "fault" and tv won't work.... Checked inverter and it's making a clicking sound.... Not good.... Decided to check the way guy at O'Reilly wired the new batteries (luckily I took pictures of wiring with my phone)... Completely wrong.... Corrected all the wires and now finally - we're working....

Oh - we discovered that somewhere along the way, we list the center Freightliner cap of our front right wheel.... Not crazy with how "ugly" it looks so I guess I'll be hunting a Freightliner dealer that might have a replacement....

Earnest they can be hard to find. If I remember right it's a 7 tab that you need. I might be wrong on that but there are two types. I did find mine at a FL dealer but none of the truck stop chrome shops had it.
What a way to start a trip. Did you suspect the batteries were getting close to replacement time? Glad you are up and running. I wish we were going to Madison but we will see you in Goshen. Be safe.

Did discover that batteries were at least 5.5 years old so I guess it was time.... Had them load tested before we left and were ok... So much for the accuracy of that test....

Finally found that COOL spot... 50 miles south of Grand Teton NP in Thayne, WY.

Low was 46 this morning..... WOOHOO!!!

High yesterday was in low 90's and same is forecast for today. But after that around 80 for the high for at least the next 10 days.

Blessed relief...... THIS is why I fulltime.

Boowho???

Day 2...

Raton Pass (7,900') Raron, NM

Praise The Lord we had a good day today.... Nice drive with NO events... Yea !!!! Nice and cool here with a cool night tonight.... Nice to finally be out of the heat....

Did find a Freightliner dealer/service center so I tried to buy the front hub cab... Out of stock because he had already had three other MH's need the same in the last week.... Go figure that... He did have the plain one (no Freightliner emblem on it) for $6.00 so I bought two... Will get the other one later - by the way, it's $50.00...

Maybe Freightliner will be at either FMCA or Goshen rally and I can pick one up there....

No for a nice meal, a little TV and early to bed... Need to be in Woodland Park, CO by 11:00 to spend the fourth with some friends....

Hauled a good bit of Nestle bottled water over that pass in the summer of '11. It was closed for several days due to fire that year. My FINAL driving job.

And Woodland Park...... WAS high on my list of places to keep cool but nothing was available. Then on my way from Yosemite to Thayne, WY, got a call from them with a cancellation..... GRRRR!!!

Anyhow, let me know where you stay and how you like it..... I may try to stay in WP for some or all of next summer. Should be pretty cool up there; 8K feet or so if I remember correctly.

Watch for a place on the way up thru Ute pass called Bust, CO. Sign says "population 2".

Plenty of places in Woodland Hills to get diesel if you don't hit it before. I snaked through a station in COS only to get up the hill and say "Well that would have been easier…"

Watch out for those Tylerites. There were 3 at Snowy Peaks in Buena Vista when I was up last year…

Day 3 - Bristlecone Lodge & RV Park - 8,500'

Good drive from Raton Pass to Woodland Park, CO... Nice little town with tons of stuff to do around the area... Can see Pike's Peak from almost anywhere in town... Still has snow on top..

Not really impressed with CG.... Really has sites crammed together... I had to ask to be moved even before I moved into our site - guy in next site had his awning open and it extended over into the site they wanted to put me in and I'd never be able to open my slides....

Went to visit our friends in the next CG down the road - Diamond CG - and if I thought where we were staying was crammed together then I was totally WRONG... I've never seen so many rigs bunched together like these were....

We head out in the AM for Laramie, WY as we move closer to Tetons/Yellowstone.... So far we've seen one other Berkshire...

Ernest, your report coincides with rvparkreviews for that area, sadly.

You have a reservation at Teton/Yellowstone?? I was told by a fellow last night (here in Thayne, WY), that nightly fees up in that area are $75-100 per night. OUCH!!!

Day 4 - Laramie, WY KOA - rain

Made the 250 mile drive from Woodland Park, CO to Laramie, WY today... Ended up at the KOA simply because it was right off freeway and I was worn out from driving in Post Fourth of July traffic and the rain... Just glad to be off the road and chilling on the sofa....

Drives should start getting a little easier after tomorrow when we drive to Rock Springs, WY where we turn N and head up to Jackson Hole, Tetons and Yellowstone where we will be for the next 7 nights then to Cody, WY for 2 nights....

So far, the $49.50 (ridiculous) here is the most I've paid.... With my Golden Age Pass we get a pull-thru site in Colter Bay for $56.00 and I will pay $70.00 for a pull-thru at Flagg Ranch.... It's almost impossible to get a full-service site inside the park (even though we were able to stay at Bridge Bay in 2013 after months of calling...). It's worth paying extra to keep from spending time driving from a CG outside the parks... Rather spend that time sight seeing.... This is where my Mini Cooper comes into it's own.... A blast to drive all thru the parks...

Colter Bay Village RV Park is our base who'll we sight-see in The Teton's and Flagg Ranch serves as the same for Yellowstone (easy into the the park thru the South gate)

This is our seventh time in these parks and we always get the same feeling we had the very first time we came so many years ago....

Anyone else up this way right now??? Would love to try and meet if so....

Storm is on it's way....

Hopefully, this will be the last CG of this type for a while.... Start up Hwy 191 towards Terons/Yellowstone in the AM.... Will be staying at Gros Ventre CG (just north of Jackson) for the next couple of nights... Will see things in and around Jackson Hole for next day or so.... Want to go see the elk refuge for sure...

This mountain must be agreeing with my Berk because I got 9.8 - 10.4 mpg the entire day... That makes me happy....

OK, saw a Berk on the road between Colter Bay campground and the entrance to Grand Teton NP on US 89. But it was coming OUT of the park around 10:30 AM today. Thought if just may be you.

I was just up there for the morning; not nearly as insane as the Yosemite area. Really pretty calm and I could actually find quite a few US citizens around.

You did say $56 per night with Golden Age card right? That makes it $112 for regular price (per night)? WOW!!

I would have expected a 5-star resort type of place for that much! Damn, I'm out of step with the world; trouble is, I remember when gas was $.15 per gallon.

Boowho??

Ernest, make sure you stop by the Cowboy Bar while you are in Jackson. Also check out the Micro Brewery there, I forget the name of it but it has a great bacon cheeseburger.

Day 6 - the Grand Tetons NP - Gros Ventre CG

Well, we are now officially in the Tetons..... Mountains are beautiful (will send pictures tomorrow) We really like this CG.... 350 sites - first-come basis.... Nice and quiet and lots of greenery between sites... 10 miles N of Jackson... Went into town and just walked around a bit.... Checked out the World Famous Cowboy Bar but settled on a place that didn't hit me as hars in the pocket... Just couldn't see paying $34.00 for a 8oz steak....

Going to take the Mini and do a lot so sight seeing tomorrow... Raining right now so we are just relaxing in our Berk... (Another day of 10+ mpg in it... Yea!!!)
