Why does Cummins ISB 6.7 have two oil drain plugs
I'm preparing to change my oil for the first time, and I might figure this out with my reading of documentation. But, I notice that the oil pan has a drain plug on the side and one on the bottom. Why both?
I guess that if you are worried that your drain pan is too small, you could drain from the upper plug first and then store the oil in a container and then open the lower plug.

Do you have a picture? You drain the oil from the bottom plug in the pan. Here's a tutorial link.

I've only noticed and used a drain plug on the bottom of the pan.

Also, 3 gallons aren't enough for our engines. 16-18 qts.

I didn't take a picture, but here is the material from the Quickserve.cummins site. The plug on the side is an M22 and the one on the bottom is M18.
Also, when I read the Cummins documentation, it says that there are two oil pan sizes for the ISB 6.7. It seems to imply that I have the small one, but I want to be careful, since I couldn't find anything bigger than a 15 litre drain pan, and the small oil pan holds 13-15 litres.

As any other oil change goes, drain it, change the filter, fill it with the 3 gallon, run it for a minute, then shut it down for 2 minutes and recheck level on the dipstick. Top off if necessary recording the added amount. Use a permanent marker and write on the upper radiator support of the total amount of quarts or liters it needs. I also write the size of the drain plug for different vehicles.

Your engine has other applications beyond pick-ups. Draining off the bottom plug may not be an option in certain applications.

Remember it takes more than 3 gallons to fill. Make sure you read your OWN info for the correct set up. My 340 will not hold as much oil as a 360 will. As for the extra plug I have no idea why it is there but as you know use the bottom one. If you wanted make a call to Cummins with the last 6 of the vin and they can tell you about the plug and how much oil yours holds.
