1st semi-major repair in 7yrs.

A/C quit on our Memorial Wknd trip on the last day. Brisk Air II 15K. Starting cap had shorted. A quick 20 min $50.00 replacement and we are good to go.

Question

Wouldn't it be great if all the issues were so quickly and inexpensively cured?

Nice work!

I felt like a hero, recently replacing the cap on my home unit: $15 from amazon, and a harbor freight multimeter. that was a quick turn, from zero to hero (and crack cold beer)

After losing a capacitor on the first day of a three-day weekend with 90 degrees and a sick DW, I keep spares on hand at home. Harvest them from old units that have died.

I'm jealous. Dometic board failed on AC, $200 part back ordered six months. Caved and bought new AC, $1,700 (for stays in FL).

It is a capacitor designed to kick start the AC's motor to start the cooling cycle.

Capacitors for electric motors are use to push extra voltage through the motor to get it to turn

On an Air conditioner you have a Fan/Blower motor and a compressor
both of them require a capacitor.
They can share a capacitor ... or each has their own capacitor

Your House air conditioner uses them as well !

I usually get mine from Grainger I take my old one to them and they match them up for me.
Saved a bunch of money on repairs by learning how to swap out the capacitor, contactor and blower motor

here is a picture of a capacitor

Well...the shared capacitor is actually two separate capacitors in one package. Count the number of terminals on one.

yup but for the newbies ... it looks like one capacitor

I also take a photo of the wires going to the capacitors before removing any of them cause my brain gets addled too quick nowadays
