AC Constantly ON - Add remote shutoff switch???

Hi everyone. First time TT owner. Been learning a lot in the past several months on this forum. Our 2022 Freedom Exp 192RBS has a GE 15k BTU AC that is Non-ducted, manual control (RARMN1A). The compressor cycles on and off but the fan (loud) never shuts off. At first I thought it was broken but on GE website Q & A I read the following.

“The fan will continue to run even if the compressor has cycled off to keep the air moving in the space. If you do not want the fan to run, you will need to turn the power off to the air conditioner. You can also turn the fan speed to low which should lessen sound. We apologize about any inconvenience this causes.”

My question is, can a thermostat be added or even a remote controlled physical switch (or even better, phone app based) added so I could shut it off and turn on in the middle of the night from bed or on a half hour or so prior to returning to campsite? Why would they make a unit that doesn’t cycle on and off like most other AC units? Thanks for your thoughts.

My window ac at home continues to blow and so do boat ac units.

My understanding is it Jase to continue to flow air for the temp sensor to know when to turn the compressor back on and to melt any residual frost buildup on the evaporator fins.

^^^X2.
Some of the newer units available online have a remote control and app for your phone, but they are more expensive.

Welcome to the forum!

That does not make any sense. Why would you not be able to turn the fan off at the AC unit.

I have an air conditioner that operates the same way in my boat. Fan stays on while compressor cycles on and off.
I picked up a wireless thermostat that I installed inline with the power line to it. I cut the cable and added male and female plugs to add the switch.

I set the ceiling knobs to max cool and low fan and let the remote thermostat swith the whole unit on and off.
The one I have can handle 1800 watts ( 15 amps ) and I'm using it on a 13.500 BTU unit. You may need to find a higher watt control.

Thinking back my motorhome had a fan on/off switch on the AC unit. My prior Toy hauler had a fan on/off switch (24volts) on the remote thermostat.
My current Toy hauler has two ACs one with a remote Tstat with on/off and the other one has a remote with on/off.

He can turn it off, but not while laying in bed. The controls are on the ceiling and the fan can be loud.

Twinboat - Thank you! This looks like exactly what I need. When you say "inline" did you cut the power line and then hardwire the power line to outlet and then wire a plug on the other side ("AC side")? Also did you leave the outlet/thermostat up in the return area of AC?

I cut the romex and put a male plug on the cold side and a female plug on the hot side.

Keep in mind that I did this on a 13500 air conditioner. You will need a higher rated device for a 15000 watt AC. They may make a hard wired one.

you could get a 110v remote control
wire it into the a/c circuit?

Two reasons as stated earlier. So thermostat in A/C better senses room temp AND prevent icing of evaporator.

Units with remote thermostats do both much better.

When the compressor turns off there is usually significant condensation remaining on the evaporator coil. If the fan is running constantly, that moisture is distributed back to the conditioned space.

In my A/C unit the moisture just drips off evaporator and drains out on the roof.

Sometimes actually picked up by condenser fan and sprayed on condenserbitself which helps cool it.

I notice no increase in felt humidity.

Not sure about GE AC. My Dometic behaves as you describe if you have the fan selector set to either low or high. If you switch it to auto, then the fan cycles with the compressor.

I agree. See if your T stat has an auto setting. If so it should cycle with the AC. However, I leave mine on low as the fan cycling is louder than the AC cycling, that is what wakes me at night.

This. RV units are well know to have icing problems causing dripping inside your unit. Ours does have an auto setting that cycles the fan in and off. We had it (icing and dripping inside) happen our first two times out. I did a lot of research to the point of calling the manufacturer - Furrion. They suggested the fan constantly on and it has not done it again.

GE A/C Units suck.

Lazy Days think they can add a mother board and thermostat, but at my expense. Really sucks, because Blue Compass sold me the unit in Tucson. They never told me the unit didn't have thermostat nor would it shut off when compressor got to desired temp.

Solved that with my Coleman Mach VIII. Not going to help with a GE unit though. Coleman now makes a new digital bluetooth with app control central blast AC cover (with more adjustable vents!). I love it because I now have 'auto' mode, which I didn't have before. Like you mentioned, leaving fan on blow humid air back into camper between compressor cycles. No longer a problem!! At first I winced at the 300 dollar cost of the part. Now I'm happy I did it.
