Bathroom Fan - When to run?

Maybe a dumb question but here goes...

Do you run your bathroom fan all the time or just when you are actually in the bathroom?

Why?

Does anyone do this in effort to avoid over-sensitive LP alarming?

We generally ONLY run ours while we are showering - to remove the moisture from the room. As soon as we get out of the shower and dry off as we leave the bathroom, we turn the vent fan off.

Running it all time (especially here in Texas with our heat) would basically defeat the air conditioners by pulling all the cold air out, probably faster than the A/C units can put it in.

You especially don't want to have that vent fan running when you flush the toilet - otherwise it will pull the black-tank smells into the trailer.

We run ours all the time except:
1) when flushing the toilet
2) when the AC is on

When taking a shower its always on, AC running or not. The Maxxair fan in the bathroom moves a lot of air if you have the windows open in another room. From our hybrid TT days we’ve found that moving air in a camper is important to control condensation.

We never boondock so those who do may be concerned about using up battery capacity.

Only run it when DW uses the toilet. I don't need it because my stuff doesn't stink.

I don't run my bathroom fan all of the time, but I always run it when the shower is being used, and for a while afterwards to evacuate as much moisture from the camper as possible. On the rare occasion that I am cooking inside, I will open the roof vent closest to the kitchen and run the bathroom fan. I will usually leave it running on its lowest setting at night while we are sleeping because if one of the dogs fart, and it is not running, the LP detector will go off. I forgot to do this last night and was awoken at 2:34 this morning. I reset the LP detector, turned the fan on and went back to bed — no more alarms sounding. The fan is also running whenever somebody is taking a dump and it usually ends-up being left on because somebody forgot to turn it off. It seems to be my job to monitor this and turn it off when it is left on by mistake.

When the fan is left on, there is a very noticeable difference in how well the air conditioning and heating is doing its job, especially when the fan is sucking air out at its top speed.

Many people warn you not to flush the toilet with the fan running, but I have never noticed an odor problem doing this because it must get sucked out faster than it can linger with my fan.

If the A/C or heat is on, we typically run the bathroom (MaxxAir Ventilation) fan during showers or AFTER the toilet is flushed to clear any odors from the room without drawing them from the black water tank. On occasion, we do run the fan briefly to eliminate false alarms (e.g., while cooking, if the meal of the moment is causing the smoke detector to sound). If neither the heat nor the A/C is on, we sometimes run the fan for a short while just to bring fresh air into the TT.

JDKbrooks - you mean "as perfect as I." You are clearly not perfect since your English grammar would have failed grade school.

Sadly, this happens all the time on broadcast news outlets, even when none of them are discussing the potential explosive capability of my farts when I am in my RV trailer bathroom without the fan running.

Run that fan and save the earth!!

We always run our bath fan all night long. But we have a variable speed Maxxair fan and have it on low (which is quiet too). We also crack open a bedroom window and that way we get fresh cool air drawn in all night. We sleep much better than at home this way!

We also have a Maxxair fan in the bedroom. Sometimes we'll run both on medium to high during the day when it's warm out. We don't use the bedroom fan at night because the fan and window are in close proximity.

That last one is good to know. I hadn’t thought about that.

We pretty much do the same for the same reasons with one exception, after a stinky flush we run the fan for a few minutes just to "clear the air" then turn it off again.

We also do not leave the vent open even though we have a cover but open it prior to turning on the fan.

I put a remote switch so we can turn the fan on and off by the lavatory, but I wish I could get a vent that was electric so we could remotely operate that too.

Use fan only as needed. In my rig, I have never noticed smells coming up from the toilet while flushing. (Maybe the tank smells better that why I have to flush...LOL) The valve is not open long at all. Step, flush, shut, refill.....repeat?

I always know when to turn the bathroom fan on. It's when my DW starts hollering at me from the living room.
