Coleman mach 15 compressor quits

I replaced the thing so it's not a wiring or thermostat or control box issue (it was 103f so no time to muck about) but I'd like to know what died on the old one.

Symptom was fan runs fine on both speeds, when set to cool the compressor would run for five-ish minutes and produce cold air and then stop requiring an undetermined amount of time to be able to repeat the cycle. No freezing was observed on the coils, no breakers ever blew, compressor was pretty darn hot to the touch but you could still touch it. It appears to only have a single capacitor for the fan and one for the compressor, both two terminal so I assume they are both start caps and not run caps? The compressor passes the resistance test when cold, I plan to run it and test it again hot on the bench and see if the thermal switch is opening to kill it. It'd be handy to know what temp that switch should open at if anyone knows. Could that one capacitor be a run capacitor also? I know a little about AC units but not a ton.

Good analysis of the issue and a good description. I'm sure most (especially me) would like to know the remainder of your findings.

My initial thought is the starting capacitor may be switched out by a relay. If it is stuck, thus keeping the starting capacitor in the circuit, I would expect high current and likewise high temperature to occur.

There is a relay in the control box, but I re-used the control box and all that stuff as-is with the new unit and it's working fine so I assume the issue is in the upper unit. I suspect the compressor is bad or the freon is low but I won't know for sure till I monkey around with it a bit more. I went lazy and just replaced the thing since there was one available locally and it's super hot here, but it'd be nice to know what happened. In the least I can salvage the fan motor, this was off a 2021 model so not a lot of use really.
