Per their website - If the refrigerator model number begins with NDM (instead of NDR) or DM (instead of RM), the refrigerator is not affected by the recall.

Did the same thing you did, when I got down to the RV shop they took a quick look and said it was already repaired.

Dometic refrigerator recall

I am furious! We bought our used 2005 Keystone this past summer (2015). First weekend we took it out, we set up the trailer and we had to leave for a few hours. When we returned, the ammonia smell at the back of the refrigerator could choke a horse. The unit had already shut down, as I assume all the ammonia had leaked out. Called Dometic after seeing our unit was part of the recall. They told me I would have to replace the cooling unit, then they would pay for the recall fix. Seriously, this is how they address an obvious inferior unit ? They obviously know the unit is prone to breaking down or they would never have issued the recall to cover their butts in case of a fire. I read at one time there was talk of a class action suit. Does anyone know any more about this ?

So sorry about your bad refer but it is 10 years old. How many refrigerator makers either domestic or RV would replace a leaking unit that is 10 years old??

Have you checked Ebay for replacement units?? It is a tough job but can
be a DIY if you are inclined. Don't know your model but looks like a little less
than $600 for a rebuilt cooling unit.

Dometic RV RM2652 Cooling Unit Amish Built $425 After $100 Rebate | eBay

It says something about a $100 rebate so price could be under $500.

Good luck!

Dometic recall

I understand what you are saying, but an RV refrigerator doesn't run 24/7/365. I bought from the original owner who took it out on weekends about 10 times/year. I would think it would last 10 years or more. My beef is the recall shows Dometic knows there is a problem and they are not addressing it.

It probably harder on the units sitting most of the time. I think it is great that a 10 year old unit is included in the recall.

Leave a car sit most of the time and see what kind of issues you have.

Good Luck....

I'm not trying to be argumentative but I believe the recall was to add a safety switch to prevent over heating. They are addressing that.
Your 11 year old unit leaked. Maybe it leaked due to over heating but the
previous owner should have had the recall performed. He didn't. You loose.
It stinks but I doubt you will get any help from Dometic on a unit that old.

If you start now you should be able to get the unit cooling by camping season.
Good Luck!

Just to clarify, was Dometic offering to reimburse you for the cooling unit, or would they only do the recall fix (safety switch?) after it was working? If they are going to reimburse you, I'd say great! I just had that issue with LG on our home fridge, except I had to dish out $3k for a new one first, but got a check about a week or so later.

Dometic RM2652 here. It stopped working. Read this thread and went to see if recall was done. It was. Pushed the reset button and it came back on. The breaker kicked after awhile. Went back to check it and realized the yellow powder was present. It is a 2004 Rockwood. So does this mean new Fridge?

Nice! Thank you for the response. Is this a closed system already loaded with ammonia. Any ideas on the tear down to insert the new one? Thanks!

Other than the video, no.

The new tubing is a complete unit pre-filled with ammonia.

Now what you need to do is realize the primary cause of ammonia leakage is normally out of level operation.

If the unit is not level in the direction of the coils, liquid ammonia can "hang" in the loops of tubing and be slow to return to the boiler. This will cause the boiler to run "hot" and eventually heat harden and crack releasing the ammonia (the yellow stain you see).

Lou,

Thanks for the referral to RVCOOL.com

I am ordering one today.

They have a choice of a brand new unit with new boiler stack for 655 or

a reconditioned unit no boiler stack (reuse mine) for 425.

Any idea about going with either?

Thanks,

Steve
